Osteomyelitis & Plate/Screw Removal

Hi all,

I broke my femur (pathological fracture from radiation received in 1988 ) on June 19th. A plate and screws were inserted to hold the bone together.

On August 8th, I had to go back to the hospital for osteomyelitis (MSSA). I had a vac placement with antibiotic cement beads as well as 2 I&D's (washouts). I have been on antiobiotics (via PICC line) since leaving the hospital and will continue being on them until 6 weeks is up.

I had different doctors telling me different things and I have no clue which is right. One doctor told me that that they will have to remove the plate and screws at some point due to the infection and that the infection will never go away from the hardware. He said if I didn't get the plate and screws removed, I'd be on antibiotics for the rest of my life. Another told me that the infection may just go away from the plate and screws after the 6 weeks of antibiotics.

So, my question is, has anyone had hardware removed once it's been infected, even though they had a vigorous treatment program?

I'm rather concerned about getting the hardware removed since the bone is already brittle and not "normal" bone.

Any thoughts or past experiences would be appreciated:)
