I am worried that I might have HIV.

26 days ago I had protected sex with a woman in Brazil. It is possible that her vaginal fluids got on my fingers and on the final cm of skin at the base of my penis where the condom stopped.

7 days later I became ill with a virus. I am on day 17 of the illness. The symptoms are as follows-

Great tiredness (for 17 days since inception, peaking on day 7).
Some pressure in my head although no pain (peaking on day 7).
Sore throat for now 17 days.
Swollen lymph glands on rhs of neck which have possibly spread to armpits (but not groin) (from day 13 to present)

I have not had the following symptoms-

yeast infections in mouth, on chest, hands, feet soles
fever
headache

The throat infection is not bacterial since I have taken antibiotics to no effect.

Since the symptoms are persisting on day 17, I am worried that I may have HIV.

Can somebody tell me what I might have?

  • Since you do you have HIV what were the symptoms you experienced for the first four monts since your exposure. It seems there is so much different information out there it is hard to distinguish what the intial symtoms of recent exposure are?

  • I do not remember having any symptoms that I was aware of I am not even sure when I cantracted the disease I found out a year after having my daughter and she nor my fiance have been infected. Yet every one has a differant reaction there also seems to be differant strands of the virus. My strand seems to be undercontrol or my body is fighting the disease very well we suspect i have had it for 5-8 years and yet my viral load is undetectable and my t-cell cout is normal 700 and above. I do not need meds yet some people become sick faster scientists are still working on the reason that is.

  • It is highly unlikely that you would be exhibiting HIV symptoms this early. Most likely, you contracted either a STD or some other virus. However, in two or three months, make sure you get a test. There are several clinics which offer HIV screening for free.
