Hi, I just came from the pediatric cardiologist and he told us that my son has a mild case of Coarctation of the Aorta. To be honest we are a little upset and worried because the Dr told us to wait and come back a week later to see if it had progressed. He told us of the treatments that are out there and stated if need be a balloon angioplasty would be done. I have looked all over to see if there are any other forums or dicussion baords out there where other parents had reached out and told thier stories. Please write me back if you had this same condition and have some advice or a story. Thanks

  • One of my twins was born with this. We had an extreme case-my son weighed 1 lb 13 oz. and the degree was quite severe. We have gone thru both open heart and angi. Please ask specific questions and I would be glad to answer them the best I can. How old is your baby? At what age are they thinking of doing the angioplasty? We did the open heart at 11 days old and the balloon at age 5 yrs. It was an overnight and then he was home. Quite simple. I have been told my cardiologists that coarc is a relatively common heart defect with an easy fix. You really don't need to worry eccessively esp since they told you it was mild. I mean, I KNOW you will worry-what parent wouldn't? But it really is a simple thing to correct. :)

  • I have this condition. I also had an ASD which has heald itself and i have another very very minor valve defect. I have had 3 balloon angioplasty's. I had open heart when i was 10 days old and when i was 4 years old. I had the balloons in between those times. I am not fifteen years old and i had an angiogram just to make sure everything was fine and it is. so dont worry it is a simple procedure that it over night. it is worrying and i cant tell you not to worry you will do that anyway, but you baby will be fine :)

  • My 10 year old daughter was diagnosed with a heart murmur at 6 months old. Further investigations revealed coarctation of the aorta and she underwent surgery at 18 months old. She recovered very quickly, amazed us all and has lived a normal life upuntil now. She is normal height and weight (considering that I am very short 5ft 2in:) ) and has a normal, healthy apetite. Recently she has complained of pins and needles in her legs and of feeling tired during PE. She has also complained of chest pains, but it sounds more like indegestion than anything else. We saw her cardiologist on Friday and he did a thorough examiniation, ECG, scan and blood pressure. Her blood pressure was slightly high for her size/ weight and he asked to see her again in 6 months. He did say that he thought everything looked normal and was seeing her purely as a precaution.....not sure what to think now. She is very pale, but so am I. I tend to be quite aneamic and I think she just takes after me! Wondered if anyone had any similar experiances??
