Could it be Lupus?

Ever since I hit puberty, I have been getting ill alot. I go to the doctor with tiredness, body aches, fever, and just overall feeling awfull. They always just say I have a "flu-like virus". It has been happening to me about twice a year, every year since I was about 13. Year round, I am constantly having little bouts of illness similar to the severe ones, but not nearly as bad, and as a result, I am always tired. I have already had my gall bladder taken out and I am only 20. I have also been having debilitating joint pain in my knees, ankles, and occationally, my back and wrists. I have also begun to start shedding alot more than ever, my hair is always getting thinner. I was recently sick with the West Nile Virus, and when my doctor was looking over my record b/c she was trying to determine what was wrong with me, I made the comment that undiagnosed illnesses was the story of my life. She told me that with my medical history, there is a strong chance that I could have Lupus. She ended up admitting me to the hospital b/c of the severity of my illness, and she told me to have them look me over for lupus while I was there. But when I suggested it to the doctor at the hospital, he kind of brushed me off saying that I couldn't possibly have lupus b/c I don't have arthritis and a rash. But I was reading up on lupus, and most sites were saying that joint pain is more common than arthritis in lupus patients and that the rash only appears in about 50-60% of lupus patients. Is it possible that what I have is lupus? Or could it be something else? And if it is lupus, what is the general prognosis?

  • Yes, you should make an appointment with a reumatologist. I have Lupus and it sounds like you might. If you are diagnosed, you will be able to live a much easier life. I have also had my gall bladder removed, for no reason. You need to stay away from the sun, get lots of sleep and don't eat red meat.Take care and good luck,Tracy

  • Thank you for the information. I went to the doctor about a month ago b/c I was barely able to walk and I was having chest pain. She did the Lupus test and came back positive, but she said that it was not a strong enough positive to diagnose me with Lupus. She also said that I have excessive inflamation through out my body due to a virus that has stayed in my system for an estimated 4-5 years. My husband is on this alternative medicine kick, and he thinks that I can be cured by taking 25 different vitamines/minerals/herbs a day, and by eliminating all grains and dairy from my diet. I think it is a bunch of quakery, but I am trying it to see if he might be right.
