HFCS Can Block Brain From Knowing What You Eat

Robin Nolan first heard about high fructose corn syrup while watching Oprah Winfrey.

On the show, Dr. Mehmet Oz listed five ingredients to avoid for those who want to live longer. One of them was high fructose corn syrup.

Oz said that HFCS alters the body's ability to regulate appetite; it can make you feel like you're not full, and then you often consume extra calories."This was my red flag (that) made me think, 'Of course -- no wonder kids are fat,'" said Nolan, a mother of two in Raleigh, N.C.She said she was devastated that everything she had been packing in her son's lunch -- including bread and peanut butter -- had high fructose corn syrup listed as an ingredient."I was blindsided by how that (junk) is in every single thing I was feeding him," Nolan said. "I got so freaked out I went to the health section of the (grocery) store and started buying organic chewy bars, organic peanut butter, even organic yogurt and applesauce."Why Is High Fructose Corn Syrup Used?

There has been controversy about high fructose corn syrup since it flooded the food market nearly 30 years ago. The process of making this sweet, thick syrup was refined by Japanese scientists in the 1970s -- just as America had an abundance of corn and the cost of sugar was high, according to the book, "Fat Land: How Americans Became the Fattest People in the World," by nutrition journalist Greg Critser.HFCS was six times sweeter than cane sugar, blended well with food and could be produced more cheaply than any high-sugar product. It extended the shelf life of vending machines refreshments, it protected frozen foods from freezer burn and it made bakery products look "more natural," Critser writes.Now, high fructose corn syrup is commonly used in all kinds of processed products, including cereals, soft drinks, condiments, candies, pasta sauces and fruit juices.63 Pounds A Year

"Our consumption of high fructose corn syrup has skyrocketed from zero consumption in 1966 to approximately 63 pounds per person per year in 1997," said Janet Bond Brill, a registered dietician and author of "Cholesterol Down: 10 Simple Steps to Lower Your Cholesterol in 4 Weeks -- Without Prescription Drugs."A debate erupted in the 1980s when researchers suggested that HFCS may be a causal factor in the obesity epidemic. It's a matter of chemical makeup -- HFCS was developed by changing cornstarch into glucose (blood sugar) and then into fructose (fruit sugar).However, the ratio of those two sugars can be manipulated. HFCS can contain equal amounts of fructose and glucose or up to 90 percent fructose and 10 percent glucose, hence the first part of its name, Brill said.This relationship is important because some researchers say that fructose is metabolized differently than glucose. They think that fructose isn't broken down before it arrives in the liver, but instead is readily converted to fat, which increases the level of fat in the bloodstream. Critser referred to the fructose process as "metabolic shunting."However, Roger Clemens, a nutritional biochemist and spokesman for the Institute of Food Technologists said he doubts that effect is real."HFCS is metabolized like any other carbohydrate that contains fructose and glucose," he said.Blocking Brain From Sensing Fat

Furthermore, HFCS and obesity have been linked because fructose ingestion does not increase the production of insulin and leptin -- the two hormones that play key roles in the long-term reduction of food intake and energy expenditure, resulting in possible weight gain, said Ronni Litz Julien, a registered dietician and author of "What Should I Feed My Kids? How To Keep Your Children Healthy by Teaching Them to Eat Right.""(High fructose corn syrup) blocks the ability of a chemical called leptin, which is the way your fat tells your brain it's there," Oz explained on the show. "It's not so much the 150 calories in the soda pop -- it's the fact at that same meal you will normally consume an extra 100 calories of food than you would have."Other Factors To Blame

Despite the research claims, Julien said there are more pressing culprits in America's obesity epidemic than HFCS, such as poor lifestyle habits, little exercise, high fat and calorie intakes and a lack of healthy messages to children."No single food or food component is responsible for the growing obesity problem. The issue is really calories in addition to minor genetic disposition," Clemens said.Clemens said the availability of high fructose corn syrup will diminish within the next decade because of increased use of corn as a biofuel and emerging food technology that will identify alternative sources for inexpensive sweeteners.Concerns Spreading

Meanwhile, the concerns about HFCS seem to be spreading."More and more people are becoming aware of how hard ingredients like high fructose corn syrup are on their bodies. They're looking for alternatives with organic ingredients and higher standards," said Traci Danielson Mitchell, a nutritionist and founder of DM Nutrition and Fitness in Chicago.Registered dieticians Brill and Julien are in that group -- both said they avoid eating foods containing HFCS."If you eat a diet that contains lots of unprocessed, natural foods, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts and olive oil -- grown the way nature intended and free of unhealthful additives -- you automatically cut down on your intake of potentially harmful ingredients that Americans eat too much of, such as HFCS, sodium, saturated fat and cholesterol," Brill said.People who should avoid HFCS are diabetics, those who are hypoglycemic and people who are overweight, Julien said. Brill added that parents should restrict children's intake of HFCS due to the growing problem of childhood obesity.Clemens said, however, that the research that suggests HFCS causes obesity, diabetes and increases the risk of cardiovascular disease remains controversial."I do not avoid products that contain HFCS. I reduce my energy intake by limiting portion sizes and consuming lower calorie foods," he said.Pushing For Change

Brill said she foresees a public backlash against the production and consumption of foods that have any connection with fueling the growing epidemic of obesity and associated diseases.Nolan is already pushing for change."They should label all foods with 'Contains High Fructose Corn Syrup' because it is a dangerous product and the manufacturers are profiting and putting so many people at risk in the name of making shareholders happy," Nolan said.She advised all consumers to carefully check a product's ingredients before they buy it."Read the labels -- marketing gets you to pick up (the product), reading the label makes you put it back," Nolan said.Other Links:Soda Company Drops Corn Syrup

  • REPRINTED FROM BEYOND HEALTH® News The Hazards of Painkillers (NSAIDS) by Raymond Francis Painkillers - NSAIDS - (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) have become a significant national health problem. According to data published in Hospital Practice, up to 200,000 Americans are hospitalized every year for problems caused by NSAIDS, and as many as 20,000 people a year die from these drugs. NSAID use carries a significant risk of gastrointestinal damage. In most people this damage is asymptomatic so they aren't aware of it. NSAIDS are in fact doing massive harm to the population, especially to the elderly who are the largest users. NSAIDS, which include aspirin, ibuprofen, indomethacin, ketoprofen, tolmetin, naproxen and others, are among the most commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals in the world. About 60 million NSAID prescriptions are written every year in America. An estimated 14 million people take them for symptomatic relief of arthritis alone. They are usually prescribed for a noble purpose—to relieve pain. But about one third of chronic NSAID users experience noticeable gastrointestinal discomfort, and this is only the tip of the iceberg. To quote from one medical journal, "Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS) are well tolerated by the vast majority of patients. In a significant minority, however, gastrointestinal side effects may result in serious complications." Herein lies the problem. Our doctors think it's OK for most people to take NSAIDS so long as they aren't rushed to a hospital with a perforated bowel. As usual, when it comes to the safety of prescription drugs, the doctors are dead wrong! Virtually everyone who takes these dangerous drugs will have their health damaged, and the longer you take them the worse it gets. Studies show that people who take NSAIDS for arthritis over a period of years suffer worse joint damage than those who take nothing at all. This is because NSAIDS block cartilage formation and promote cartilage destruction. In a 1992 study published in the Scandinavian Journal of Rheumatology, long term users of NSAIDS were hospitalized six times more often than nonusers. Deaths from gastrointestinal causes were twice as often, and half of all patients who died of ulcer-related complications reported recent ingestion of NSAIDS. Another large study published in Gut found that in patients who died of NSAID induced complications, 67% succumbed to acute hemorrhage, 9% to gut perforation, and 24% to a combination of the two. A 1996 study in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that patients taking NSAIDS were 4 to 17 times more likely to suffer acute kidney failure. Another 1996 study in the Lancet showed that aspirin in any form, no matter what you do to it such as buffering and coating, will cause gastrointestinal bleeding. In fact, as little as one aspirin can cause bleeding. The combination of NSAID use and alcohol consumption raises the risk of bleeding more than fourfold. NSAIDS damage the tissues in our digestive system, and even a small amount of damage to this complex system is capable of altering the biological balance so as to open the door to a cascade of events leading to maldigestion, malabsorption, dysbiosis, yeast and parasitic infections, and eventually diseases of all kinds from arthritis to cancer to AIDS. Here's one mechanism by which NSAIDS damage gut tissue. NSAIDS work by blocking the action of messenger molecules called prostaglandins. Some prostaglandins cause inflammation and pain while others stimulate healing and repair. NSAIDS block both. Because the intestinal lining has to be replaced about every three days, blocking the repair process over time results in a gut that is weak, inflamed, and leaky. Damaged gut tissue will malabsorb nutrients. You could eat an excellent diet and still suffer malnutrition because nutrient absorption is impaired. Since malnutrition is the leading cause of death in America, adding malabsorption to our already deficient diets is catastrophic to long term health. Another thing that happens when gut tissue is injured is that it becomes more permeable to the large molecules of undigested food as well as to microorganisms. When this happens, allergenic substances and microorganisms can enter into the blood stream and circulate throughout the body provoking chronic immune responses. These immune responses sometimes create antibodies that match certain body tissues. Since the antibody can't distinguish between the two, it may end up attacking the body and provoking an autoimmune disease such as arthritis. In this manner, NSAIDS can actually cause arthritis or make existing arthritis worse, thus requiring more NSAIDS for the pain and putting a vicious cycle into motion. Excessive immune reactions produce a lot of debris called immune complexes that can overwhelm the kidneys and cause kidney disease. NSAIDS also destabilize the normal composition of the bacteria living in the gut, especially when combined with antibiotics. The resulting abnormal gut flora inhibits proper digestion and assimilation of food. This causes malnutrition. Undigested food results in putrefaction in the lower intestines, which produces toxins. These toxins damage the immune system and poison cells throughout the body. Partially digested food remnants, resulting from impaired digestion, are capable of provoking immune reactions. When intestinal permeability is increased, due to damaged gut tissue, these food remnants can gain access to our blood system. This provokes an immune response that contributes to immune overload and may manifest as food allergies or even precipitate autoimmune diseases. Immune function is further damaged when the resulting overload inhibits antibody formation and the proper functioning of our disease-fighting immune cells. If impaired digestion is significant, and remains uncorrected, people can waste away and become more susceptible to opportunistic infections. This is very common in people with AIDS. Once normal gut ecology is altered, it provides opportunity for yeast, fungal, bacterial, and parasitic infections. These new microorganisms, which replace the normal bacteria, do further damage to gut tissue, add to immune overload, and place new burdens on an already overtaxed immune system. They also produce toxins that poison the body, while no longer carrying out the important jobs of the normal bacteria such as producing critical vitamins and fatty acids. In addition to the above, NSAIDS can cause a variety of other problems including effects on the central nervous system such as cognitive dystoreunction, hearing loss, headaches, and ringing in the ears. They can also cause skin rashes and photosensitize the skin making it susceptible to sun damage and skin cancer. NSAIDS can also cause anemia, vision problems, pancreatic problems, as well as liver failure and acute kidney failure. Convincing new evidence links aspirin consumption to macular degeneration, which is the number one cause of blindness in people over 55. NSAIDS also interfere with melatonin production. A 1996 study in Physiological Behavior showed a 75% nighttime reduction in melatonin secretion. This can cause problems with sleep, but more importantly, decreased melatonin production has been associated with cancer promotion. On the bottom line, NSAIDS merely suppress symptoms while initiating a cascade of events with potentially catastrophic consequences. There are only two causes of disease—deficiency and toxicity. NSAIDS destabilize the digestive system in a way that promotes both deficiency and toxicity thereby systematically destroying health. The resulting chronic immune responses throw the body into immune overload thereby depressing immune function and promoting a variety of immune dystoreunction diseases including allergies, arthritis, autoimmune syndromes, and AIDS. What to do if you have an inflammation? There are viable options. From a dietary standpoint, eat a whole food diet that is at least 75% raw. Avoid sugar, white flour, hydrogenated oils, junk foods, colas, and drink plenty of pure water. Avoid meat and dairy, but do consider oily fish such as salmon. From a supplement standpoint, take vitamin C up to bowel tolerance, 2 to 4 grams of quercitin per day, 30 to 60 mg of zinc daily, 100,000 units of beta-carotene for several days and then 25,000 for several weeks plus vitamin A and vitamin E. Essential fatty acids such as Udo's Choice are also recommended. Digestive enzymes and 1 to 3 grams of bromelin a day between meals have proven useful in reducing inflammation. Glucosamine sulfate is a nutrient for joint and connective tissue and has proven more effective than NSAIDS. There are a number of herbs that are anti-inflammatory as well as homeopathic remedies. The point is there are excellent alternatives to NSAIDS so these dangerous drugs can be avoided. The same is true for vaccinations. For a long time no one considered the effect of repeated vaccinations on the brain. This was based on a mistaken conclusion that the brain was protected from immune activation by its special protective gateway called the blood-brain barrier. More recent studies have shown that immune cells can enter the brain directly, and more importantly, the brain’s own special immune system can be activated by vaccination.You see, the brain has a special immune system that operates through a unique type of cell called a microglia.These tiny cells are scattered throughout the brain, lying dormant waiting to be activated. In fact, they are activated by many stimuli and are quite easy to activate. For our discussion, activation of the body’s immune system by vaccination is a most important stimuli for activation of brain microglia.Numerous studies have shown that when the body’s immune system is activated, the brain’s immune cells are likewise activated. Children are receiving as many as 22 inoculations before attending school.What Happens When the Brain’s Immune System is Activated?The brain’s immune system cells, once activated, begin to move about the nervous system, secreting numerous immune chemicals (called cytokines and chemokines) and pouring out an enormous amount of free radicals in an effort to kill invading organisms. The problem is--there are no invading organisms. It has been tricked by the vaccine into believing there are.Unlike the body’s immune system, the microglia also secrete two other chemicals that are very destructive of brain cells and their connecting processes. These chemicals, glutamate and quinolinic acid, are called excitotoxins. They also dramatically increase free radical generation in the brain. Studies of patients have shown that levels of these two excitotoxins can rise to very dangerous levels in the brain following viral and bacterial infections of the brain. High quinolinic acid levels in the brain are thought to be the cause of the dementia seen with HIV infection.The problem with our present vaccine policy is that so many vaccines are being given so close together and over such a long period that the brain’s immune system is constantly activated. This has been shown experimentally in numerous studies. This means that the brain will be exposed to large amounts of the excitotoxins as well as the immune cytokines over the same period.Studies on all of these disorders, even in autism, have shown high levels of immune cytokines and excitotoxins in the nervous system. These destructive chemicals, as well as the free radicals they generate, are diffused throughout the nervous system doing damage, a process called bystanderinjury. Not only will some be killed directly by the blast but those far out into the radius of the explosion will be killed by shrapnel.Normally, the brain’s immune system, like the body’s, activates quickly and then promptly shuts off to minimize the bystander damage. Vaccination won’t let the microglia shut down. In the developing brain, this can lead to language problems, behavioral dysfunction and even dementia. In the adult, it can lead to the Gulf War Syndrome or one of the more common neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s dementia or Lou Gehrig’s disease (ALS).A recent study by the world-renowned immunologist Dr. H. Hugh Fudenberg found that adults vaccinated yearly for five years in a row with the flu vaccine had a 10-fold increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease. Patients see a clear liquid in a syringe - but back in the laboratory a wide variety of complex processes are used to make it, many incorporating cells or body chemicals which originate from the animal kingdom. But scientists are adamant that a long history of using such materials has produced no health problems as a result. There are two ways in which animal material is used to make vaccines. The first is the use of animal cells as "nurseries" for the modified viruses doctors want to use as the main ingredient of a vaccine. Chicks and monkeys The scientist has to find a cell in which the virus in question will replicate to produce more copies of itself. Although human growth factors can be extracted, these do not provide as reliable results as other factors, such as foetal calf serum, which is widely used. It is this chemical which is at the centre of the current scare over poliovirus vaccine. 'Bovril for cells' Dr Deborah Scopes, a spokesman for the British Society of Immunology, said: "This is like Bovril for cells. "It's a big broth which helps growth." Once sufficient numbers of the virus have been replicated, the manufacturers use complex filtration and purification processes to try to remove everything but the viruses from the vaccine. Dr Scopes said: "The quality control mechanisms are amazing. Basically it is a bad idea to have anything but the virus itself in the vaccine. "You don't want to produce an immune response to cow tissue - you want to produce the biggest immune response possible to the viruses, to make the vaccine effective." The problems with one brand of poliovirus stem from foetal calf serum which has been sourced in the UK. The theoretical risk is that if the serum was drawn from a calf foetus carrying the proteins thought to be the infective agent of BSE, some of those proteins might remain in a vaccine given orally to children. The purification process used to remove everything but the viruses renders this even less likely.
