whistleing/wheezing when I breathe

I do not have asthma... i know that's the first thing you will think from my thread title. I woke up yesterday morning with a stabbing pain in my throat, coughing a lot and spitting up yellow-green mucus. So i went to the doctor and they did a strep test but it was not strep (nor do I ever get something so easily diagnosed). So they gave me anti-biotics and sent me on my way. Last night was horrible... my body was achey, i was really sweaty (probably had a fever) and it was hard to breathe in very deep, like my chest didn't want to expand. I've been drinking tons of water and had a big smoothie and everything, and I am feeling better yet it whistles when I try to expand my chest to take as big of breaths as I can when I am not sick.

Anyway... do u think the whistle/wheeze is just from having a lot of mucus to cough up yet, or have I developed some kind of asthma??

Oh i should also note that I smoke. I am trying so hard to quit but it is difficult. I think this sickness might help me with one final push to get healthy.

  • All the little parts of your lungs are getting gunked up by cigarette by-products, so that puts stress on the next larger oxygen pathway. Your lungs are screeching for air. You probably have bronchitis or tracheitis after your flu, and probably always will get it after a respiratory illness until you stop smoking.

  • I don't know if this is will help, but you might ask or look up information on Pleurisy. I've been diagnosed with it, have not had the crud that you had I have had the sharp pains. I do not smoke, don't do drugs or drink. I have lived with a smoker for 20 years, second hand. No offense, my smoker friends. :) I often wonder if it is inherited. Best wishes that you get well.
