My son, 15 yrs is suspected of having focal epilepsy since yesterday because he had seizure for about 1-2 minutes while he was at home. We took him to a doctor and the doctor advised us to have EEG and CT-Scan. Result of CT-Scan was ok, but the doctor suspected that there is focal epilepsy in the EEG result. What would be the best treatment for focal epilepsy? Please help?

  • Focal seizures are also referred to as partial seizures and result from abnormal electric brain function in one or more areas of one side of the brain. They are different from generalized seizures, which involve both sides of the brain. With focal seizures, a child may experience an aura or a strange feeling before the seizure actually occurs. These auras are warning signs that a seizure is approaching. Epilepsy treatment is usually through medication prescribed by a doctor based on factors like type of seizure, age of the child, side affects, etc. In cases where a child continues to experience seizures inspite of being on medication, he or she may be advised to follow a ketogenic diet. This is a high-fat, low carbohydrates diet that aids formation of ketones by the body. Although it’s not known how exactly the diet works, but it has been successful in stopping seizures in some children.
