Hi guys, firstly apologies if this turns into a long thread,I jsut want to make sure I get everything across...

For the last 6 months or so I have been steadily gaining weight for what appears to be no reason at all.I eat a fairly healthy diet of between 800-1000 cals each day,I know the calorie content of every food and write down everything I eat and drink so know no extras are getting in.I exercise regularly and have a fairly active job.

I had severe anorexia for a long time but before the weight started piling on I was maintaining my weight at a BMI of 17.I have now gained 1 1/2 stone and it doesn't seem like it is stopping.I have had my thyroid tested which apparantley was fine and all 3 GP's at my surgery are treating me like a hypochondriac. I have tried eating more to speed up my metabolism and then eating less to starve myself both to no effect and i am really at my wits end as to what to do and extremely distressed at the weight gain.

Also for the last 2 weeks i have been having extreme stomach pains which I can't find any correlation in.The pain is very low down on my right side and so bad when they come that I can't walk, they are only relieved by lying down on my side for a long time.At the same time I feel sick and dizzy and my stomach is very bloated and hard.

Can anyone give me any advice as to where I should go next or what might be going on??Thanks for any replies in advance!

  • Hi,You didn't say hbow old you are, if you are in your teens or 20's then weight gain can be completly normal, it's just as your body changes as you grow older. You didn't say if you are male or female!!If you are female it could be an ovarian cyst. I have had a couple of these and each time I had pain as you described and weight gain. You will need an ultrasound scan to confirm if it is.Also if you are female is there any chance you are pregnant???Hope this helps

  • Apologies,I am female and 21 years old.I don't think that it is related to just normal weight gain sort of thing cos the amount of weight I have gained is totally disproportional to the amount of calories etc I have been intaking each day.I had amenorrhoea with my anorexia that lasted 5 years and I am wondering if it might be something to do with my ovaries etc because they have not been working for so long!!My stomach is also always incredibly bloated now so I'm going to ask my GP if I can be referred for a scan.

  • I've had ovarian cysts with the exact same pain, thought it was appendicitis hurt so bad, but if it was your appendics you would be in the emergency room by now, its not a slow process its quick and painful. You should see your ob for a transvaginal ultrasound, chances are its a simple cyst and not anything serious but please get it checked out
