What could this be?

I am a female of 38 years. I have had an underactive thyroid for the last 21 years. More recently I have noticed other things that dont seem related to the symptoms of thyroid disease.

My mouth has been getting steadily drier over the last 12-18 months. I have also noticed my nose getting dry and I get periodic itches on my arms and breasts. More recently I have been asked to have blood tests on a more frequent basis and advised to go on a low protein diet.

My doctor has not really said what this could be but says my thyroid function levels are lower than they should be, but even though my medication has been increased I still feel lethrgic and tired most of the time.

Any ideas?

  • itching around there and tiredness can be a sign of liver not functioning very well, may be worth asking for a liver function test.

  • Dry mouth could be Sjogren's syndrome, an autoimmune disorder affecting the salivary glands and tear glands. It is more common in other autoimmune diseases, like thyroid disease. Some thyroid patients don't do well on synthroid and get more relief of symptoms on Armour thyroid (which contains T4 and T3).
