I've been coughing since november (2006) and so far I haven't been able to get rid of it. So far I'm headed to my third doctor. First doctor (BEFORE I HAD MEDICAL INSURANCE) gave me some antibiotics, some cough syrup with codein and some anticongestant pills. I started feeling better after I took my medicine but as soon as I ran out the medicine, the dam cough came back.

I managed to get insurance through my job (Kaiser) and this doctor said I had whopping cough. I'm 21 years old but I don't believe I have that because I don't make a whopping sound after my cough attacks finish. This new doctor gave me more antibiotics and no luck, I don't feel any difference. I have to make a new appointment with a new doctor and hope to see if he can cure me.

I'm tired of this, I haven't been able to live my life, I can't laugh because if I do I start coughing a lot. I can't sleep very well because the cough wakes me up and the cough syrup doesn't do anything anymore. Please help!

  • That sounds absolutely horrible, my boyfriend had a cough for almost 4 months straight, after alot of meds and antibods, he finally decided to go see a specialist, which said that he contracted some type of virus, and he needs to be on antibiotics 24/7. He had to inject himself with the antibiotics for another 2 months before he started getting better. Ask the next GP that you going to see, that he refer you to a specialist.Sorry, I know what you going through.

  • WHAT THE ***l? ANTIBIOTICS DON'T WORK ON VIRUSES!!!! Sorry to rant, but antibiotics are just horrible and often make you much sicker - but doctors will through a prescription at you before you even enter their clinic! UGHHH... Concerning the last post who's boyfriend is injecting antibiotics - please have him take a good probiotic to keep his intestines in check. I suggest you try acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine to treat the cough. Chinese herbs are very effective for this. Do you cough up a lot of phlegm or is it a dry cough? Does your chest hurt? Try slippery elm tea to help with the cough. To find an acupuncturist near you please visit www.acufinder.com and type in your zip code. Please consider this as a treatment option! Hope this helps.Doctor of Oriental Medicine

  • Don't get too worried yet. My pulmonologist says most of his patients are getting this cough (it's viral) and can't get rid of it for months. I've had it for a month now myself. Antibiotics won't help with the underlying virus, but they may help if you've developed a secondary infection.See a pulmonologist. He'll know if it's the virus du jour or something else. He can also rule out an underlying asthma condition (which you may have developed; you can get it as an adult). He can also determine if you have an allergy condition exascerbating the problem (since the weather in the East has been so warm, allergy sufferers are having big problems in what should be the quiet season). You may need a short course of oral prednisone to knock down the inflamation that's causing the cough. I also have a steroid inhaler (but I have asthma anyway) and an anti-allergy nasal spray. The cough medicine at least lets me sleep at night.Slippery elm tea does work very well for symptom relief. Try to stick to clear, hot liquids (not coffee) and cut back on dairy (which provokes mucous production). Drink enough regular water or non-caffeinated tea during the day to keep yourself hydrated. And when you go outside, make sure you wrap a scarf over your mouth and nose (the cold air will irritate your lungs and make the coughing worse). As with all things, this, too, shall pass. Hang in there; you're not suffering alone. Best of luck to you.

  • Yes when I cough I get a lot of mucus (yellow color). I just threw up, but it wasn't food or liquid it was all mucus...Thank you all for your help. I'm so miserable right now, and the thing that irritates me the most is that I'm spending good money on medicine that is not helping me.

  • Try steam room and chest pounding (you need a partner). These will both help. Worked for my son who had 3 month old cough and couldn't sleep at night. I wouldn't give up on the antibiotics either (they helped my son also). Peace good luck.Matt
