Once or twice a month I get symptoms that are similar to food poisening or stomach flue. Others eat what I do and are OK. It always occurs late at night starting from 11:30 PM to 2:30 AM. Symptoms include gradual onset of stomach pain. First it seems just like a mild upset stomach, but it goes into bad to very bad pain that comes and goes in waves. Often before it starts, my leg muscels start to jump slightly but uncontrollably. The leg problems change from mild to severe cramping in my calves, thighs, hip and arch of my foot like charlie horses as the episode progresses. I get a fever and chills and sweats. I feel like I want to throw up but cant usually until 2 or three hours into the episode. Then I experience mild to violent vomiting, 4 to 24 times. Vomiting brings some relief to the pain. Eventually I get diarreah for a couple hours. My leg cramping is such that I have to sleep backwards in my bed, pressing my foot against the headboard to keep my foot at a 90 degree angle. If I let my leg / foot relax and point my toes, I get woken up by charlie horses and can't sleep. Needless to say I get very fatigued. Afterward I am very drained and sleep deprived and sleep for a day. I have tried to think of what foods bring it on, but there seems to be no clear pattern. The doctors don't know, what it is. I have been looked at in every concevable way (including exporatory surgery), and there appears to be nothing wrong.
