My sister has been going to the doctor and they cannot tell her what is wrong. She is about 5'6 and she has lost alot of weight over the last months. She has had blood test and ultrasounds and no answer. I want to help her. What are some reasons for severe weight loss?

  • Have you taken her to a specialist? If they did all those test Im sure they would have detected if it was cancer. A friend of mine has Chrones Disease and that effects your stomache and she lost alot of weight she was 135 and got down to 90 pounds.. That's the only thing I can think that would cause her to lose severe weight other than cancer, which doesnt seem its that because of the test she's already had.. I hope everything works out ok for you :)

  • :o Has your Sister been to her Gyno . for a check - up ? Sudden severe weight loss is a symptom of Ovarian Cancer . Ovarian Cancer is on of the most misdiagnosed Cancers . Remember Gilda Radner from Saturday Nght Live , she died from Ovarian Cancer because the Dr's kept telling her that nothing was wrong with her , the Cancer was'nt actually diagnosed until it was in the late stage . Read the book " Gilda's Story " if you get the cahnce , it was written by her husband after she died . A great website for Women is - Hystersisters .com . I hope that I have'nt scared you . Does your Sister have Nausea , abdominal pain , constant feeling of tiredness ? I have Ovarian problems , the Dr. thought I had Ovarian Cancer last year , I was sent to a Gyno. Oncologist for an appointment , but the Oncologist was pretty sure that I did'nt have Cancer . So he told me to just see how things progressed , after three Ultrasounds , he siad that I did'nt need to come back . Tkae Care of your Sis , keep me informed .:p

She has had blood test and ultrasounds and no answer. I want to help her. What are some reasons for severe weight loss? I am not a doctor, but have researched this thoroughly for myself/have had tests. Obstruction of the intestinesCertain cancers (for example colon or stomach)Ulcers can cause the painMetabolic disorders or diabetes can cause weight gain or lossDepression (are you sure she is eating right?)Simple Irritable Bowel and related problems---diarreah/constapation too?Differred pain from another location (for example, the female organelle)Liver problems (I don't think anyone will ever tell you this, but you know what, my grandfather had simple nausea and stomach pain for a long time, they said he was fine, did every test known to man, said nothing wrong, and it was liver cancer-and he died. Ask the doctor of the possibilities and I've had to insist that things be checked with these doctors that don't want to deal with complex symptoms.) I would ask the doctor if they thought a CT scan of her mid-section would be more revealing. Find out what they have done, write stuff down, request copies of charts and x-rays (she has the right to them) to take to future doctors so they can get a full picture. Other options include going to a more advanced research center with curious doctors that will check stuff out. UAB, Birmingham, AL, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville(I think), TN, Jacksonville, FL medical centers are purported to be among the best, all for example. One thing though: It has been said time and again that "That's the danger of self-diagnosis; patients always assume the worst." So don't freak out, it could be nothing, just don't ignore it either and ask questions, it's the sure way to get to the bottom of it, serious or not. It has also been said: 'There are no stupid questions, except the ones you don't ask.'

  • Have you considered food allergies? Stomach pain and weight loss could be a lot of things like the last post said, but while you work with the doctors it also might be worth trying an anti inflammation diet, which will reduce exposure to the top eight food allergens. Doing the diet is hard at first cuz most foods contain ingredients that are made from at least one of the top eight allergens, but it’s worth the work. Weight loss and stomach pain can point to many different disorders but it could also be from food allergies, which can also cause weight loss and stomach pain too. Just a thought. Good luck!

  • Yes, I would aso aree to that. There are many simple illnesses that can cause other major problems to show that don't make sense or seem unrelated or alone. For example, an older person with severe flu may have respratory arrest or a person with allegies may have swollen lymph nodes or a person with colon cancer may appear to have back problems. So its possible that she appears to have something wrong with the stomach, but unbeknownst its being caused by simple allergies. Try it out.

  • Well, actually, this is getting us thinking. My grandmother's cancer was also ovarian I have discovered and hers was not found for 13 years they said. I don't think this sounds like that, but it has been known to happen. No reason not to check it out tho.
