Hi

I have been dx B12 def, folate def and ferritin (iron)def, the last two only recently. For about the last week or so i have been very, very thirsty and also weeing a lot,no surprise really with the amount i am drinking.I don't seem to be able to quench the thirst at all and was wandering if it could be to do with meds i am on,or something else i should look into.
folic acid started 8 weeks ago
iron tablets " "

I am also on B12 jabs but started those 2 years ago.

Any info would be appreciated
Thanks in advance.

  • Hithankyou for your repliesI have looked up diabetes and I do have blurred vision, this started about 5 months ago, went to the opticians and prescribed glasses. For about the last 18 months i have been experiencing numbness in my hands and feet and my left leg occasionally gives out on me,tiredness and weakness but i had put this down to the def in B12,folate and ferretin.I am also cold all the time don't know if this is a symptom.Another thing i have is that i am very itchy,no rash or anything.Mainly at night. Two years ago i was admitted to hospital with abdominal pain and had a finger ****k test,i think this is to check sugar levels,it was ok.but no dx on the abdo pain.I still get the abdo pain.It radiates around the back, they thought at first it was a kidney stone. My paternal grandmother had diabetes,is it hereditory?does anyone know what the blood test is called that checks for diabetes as i have copies of blood work that has been done recently,i may have already been checked. There is one more thing i would like to ask,if anyone knows, on one of my blood test i had a low serum urea level on the urea and electrolytes blood test, doctor has not said anything about it.thanks in advance

  • You need a fasting blood sugar drawn and if that doesnt show anything maybe a glucose tolerance test. Another thing you can do is log all food and drinks and see if high carbohydrate/sugar foods and drinks increase your thirst.

  • Decreased levels of B12 or folate may be seen with chronic disorders such as liver or kidney disease and with medications such as phenytoin (anti-seizure medication), metformin (for diabetes/PCOS), or methotrexate (for arthritis). Deficiency may also be due to insufficient intake, inadequate absorption, increased loss, or to increased need. Deficiency due to insufficient intake of B12 is uncommon but may be seen in vegetarians and their children who do not consume any animal products. Another causes of B12 deficiency is insufficient stomach acid necessary to separate B12 from ingested protein (mostly seen in elderly) or a lack of intrinsic factor (substance in the stomach that binds with B12 before absorption by the intestines.) Pernicious anemia is an autoimmune diseasses involving damage to these substance in your stomcah, resulting in decreased production of intrinsic factor. Both B12 and folate deficiencies can also arise with diseases or conditions that cause general malabsorption Celiac, colitis and other intestinal causes. The symptoms are alot like the symptoms you find in diabetes: The symptoms associated with B12 and folate deficiency are often subtle and can be nonspecific. They are related to the anemia, nerve involvement, and to malabsorption. Patients with an early deficiency may be diagnosed before they experience any overt symptoms, while other affected patients may experience a variety of mild to severe symptoms that can include: Confusion and even paranoia if left untreated long enoughDiarrhea Dizziness Fatigue (weakness) not to be confused with malaise (sick feeling)No appetite Paleness Rapid heart rate Shortness of breath Sore tongue and mouth Tingling, numbness, and/or burning in the feet, hands, arms, and legs because of the low B12A lack of vitamin B12 may change the surface of the tongue causing thirst Treatment for B12 and folate deficiency involves long-term supplementation in some cases life long. If a patient with B12 deficiency only takes folic acid supplements, the anemia may be resolved and the underlying neuropathy (nerve damage) caused by the B12 deficiency will persist. This nerve damage can become permanent if left untreated. With all this said, I would still have the diabeates looked into!Hope this helps. Kiera
