Upper arm pain

For the past 3 or 4 weeks I have been experiencing a lot of pain in my upper left arm. I do not think I've injured it, went to the doctor who said it was probably a sore muscle, but the pain and stiffness keeps increasing. I cannot dress myself without it hurting a lot, and the arm aches quite a bit at night, which really disturbs my sleep. Occasionally when moving my arm too quickly I get a very sharp stabbing pain in it which makes it more sore than ever. Any advice would be much appreciated.
