Unusual "Whistling-like" sound

My father is 83 years old. Yesterday, when I was talking on the phone with him, I heard a single whistle-like sound which I thought was, perhaps, a smoke detector in the background. Today, when I talked to him, he said that this sound was coming from himself and that it occurred irregularly, perhaps once an hour. This symptom has come suddenly and I find it odd. Any guesses as to what this might be??
