I'm an otherwise healthy 20 year old female with 2 children. For the past year i have been getting a nocturnal cough and when tired or had a glass of wine it felt like my throat refused to swallow.
For the last 4 months i have been unable to swallow food, drink and my own saliva without severe discomfort, i am now eating only sponge cake dipped in coffee as even soup is too tricky.
I have had an upper endoscopy, barium swallow, blood tests and a swab for infection but all came back clear. I have been on omeprazole because the doctor thought i might be bringing up a little bit of acid but it hasn't helped.
I have lost 30lbs and had a urine infection from not enough fluids.
I have had 3 sinus infections and an ear infection in the last few months as well. The last 5 nights i've been finding it hard to breathe, having to make myself breathe.
No-one seems to want to help me! I can't live like this! PLEASE help!

  • Maybe a video swallogram? This is a real time study fluoroscoping the swallowing muscles with a variety of food textures. Speech therapists usually conduct these tests in radiology. Also, look into MS, angioedema, throat dystonia.

  • The throat Dystonia is a very good point. My brother has throat Dystonia and now has a feeding tube due to the weight loss and inability to swallow enough food. But, Dystonia is a secondary disease (usually). He also had all the tests done: Barium swallow, endoscopy, electrodes placed on the front of the neck. Usually throat dystonia involves the muscles in the back of the throat, but I am not a Physician, I can only speak about the experience that I have with my brother and his symptoms that led to throat Dystonia.
