For the past 2 years or so, I have been getting recurrent yeast infections. I'm on low-dose birth control, have been frequently retested for diabetes and negative HIV. My primary care and my gyno cannot explain it, nor do they care to try. I switched to cotton underwear, shower after working out, and use unscented soap. About 3 months ago, I developed the worst itching on my vulva but not in my vagina. I had cultures taken b/c of my recurrent yeast, and EVERYTHING was negative, including yeast. I use vagisil atleast 3 times daily, and the itching is becoming unbearable. I paid insane money for the gyno, for him to tell me to use metronidazole vag. gel for itching of my vulva... BUT THERES NO BACTERIA FOUND!!! All it does is give me a yeast infection. I'm distressed and depressed. If anyone can relate please help!! This is driving me crazy! my symptoms are just intense itching of the top of my vulva (around clitoris and in folds above it) and insanity due to misdiagonsis!!!

  • ohhh how aweful for you. Birth control pills and antibiotics can help make candida thrive as they alter the pH of your natural bodies environment. "Everyone has candida, a form of yeast ( Candida Albicans ), normally confined to the lower bowels, vagina and the skin. In healthy individuals with strong, functioning immune systems, it is harmless and kept in check by "good" bacteria, called Bifidobacteria and Acidophilus." Im no doctor by it sounds like you are becoming more sensitive to the yeast.. and when they tested your vulva.. they would expect to find some anyway.. and may dismiss as normal. I believe your itchiness may still be due to it. You need to stop taking antibiotics (unless really really necessary) and use another kind of birth control method.. Plain yogurt with live cultures can be used vaginally. Also start taking a good quality probotic, you may need to take them long term.

  • could be your detergent or soap..try natural or organic...other than that, you may need a blood test for herpes 2 to rule that out.

  • I used to have that same problem for years and no doctor or anyone could help me. I would get that same itching almost every month usually before my period. I started taking acidopholus (sp) supplements about 6-8 months ago and have had no problems since. You can find these at most drug or vitamin retailers. From what I know the acidopholus is an active good bacteria in yogurt but taking these pills is much more convienent than eating yogurt all the time plus they supposdly help the digestive system too. Good luck

  • try using cortisone cream. If the over the counter strength doesn't work, then ask your gyn for the rx strength. That is what I used to use. This won't diagnose your problem, but it will help until you can get it diagnosed. I've used it before, with great success.

  • Have your doctor test you for vulvar cancer. I was misdiagnosed. By the time mine was found, I was in stage 4 squamous cell cancer. I had a small sore, the doctor said it was a blood vessel. He also treated me with for a swollen lymph node in my groin for 4 months. After I got a second opionion, I had a radical vulvarectomy and radiation, I am in remission. This is a rare type of cancer, often missed by doctors, demand a test for vulvar cancer.

  • It is likely Lichen Simplex or Lichen Sclerosis. It fits the same symptoms I have been living with for a long time as well. It is very overwhelming. Good Luck, my doctor found it by doing a biopsy! Hope you find relief! You arent alone.

  • Vulvydinia and Lichen SclerosisYou want to know why no one knows or has answers to this and no cure...because these two are the result of multiple underlying issues.....keep readingOk..so after 2 years of build up of itching, treating twice for my own yeast infection. (I've only had 3 before in my life) the itching got stronger and felt more like electrical impulses I had to address with mineral oil and a major scratch session. My labia started to look shriveled and it became sore and painful. Sometimes there were tiny hard nubs near the surface of the labia.I finally booked an appt. Dr. took only ONE look and said "Jock Itch"...which made sense..I never had it before...and this was a different type of itch from your standard yeast infection.....well... it wasn't jock it. I was treating for it for a month. After the second week she changed the cream. Still no effect...getting worse now. On this same visit (the first) I notified her that I did not think it was a yeast infection because no disharge and the itching felt very different...more like bugs crawling and biting you. Clitoris to anus. I also developed later a lot of body itching. I would be laying there and it felt like a fly landed on my leg or arm.I went back in. She was saying yeast infection now. Meanwhile she never took tissue samples or took tissue to a lab.Diflucan for two months! Nothing..getting worse. I'm using whatever I can find to alleviate..olive oil, vicks vapor rub, mint scented creams. (The mint would trick the nerves and the itching would temporarly lighten)Ok..so the next visit - cortizone creams and lidocaine cream. They did some improvement but after 2 weeks..it came back..with a vengeance.So....I find another doctor through recommendation (in NYC) - an old skool guy. he is so old skool he accepts no insurance. He did take approx 8 tissues samples and in the same room tested for various virus and bacterial infections right in front of me while my legs were still up. He had a microscope RIGHT ON THE COUNTER in the exam room. I got to take a look and he explained everything he was doing and why!!!Gave 4 vials of blood. He is checking hormone, thyroid, iron (too much too little) everything. I will find results on these in a few days.So here is it!!DRUM ROLL PLEASE.....Some mild yeast AND....continue drum roll...Gardnerella Bacteria!!! it is a highly mis diagnosed bacteria. and why???No friggin microscopes in the Dr's offices!!!Now hear this. He says..you cannot treat one or two things. There is a reason why you were not able to fight off these two bacteria. It's a whole system that got out of whack for various reasons!!! It's compounded!I was flabbergasted..I was immediately flashed back to the 70s! A time when logic and science was something that doctors worked under. When I had explained all my troubles earlier and how she just looked and said "jock itch". HE WAS LIVID.."you cannot just look and say yeast or jock itch" it has to be thoroughly TESTED and PROVEN! Then he just shook his head in disgust. Ok..he was a really sweet guy..so it sounds like he was mad..but I think it's frustrating from his point of view. You could tell.I'm waiting for results on Iron, Thyroid and other things he going to take hard look at.I was given a special cream that only ONE chemist in Manhattan makes from his own recipe. It is a steroid cream. He will also not prescribe prednisone..he has a milder form and one other antibiotoc for the gardnerella - specific-After the first 24 hours of starting treatment..my labia looks almost back to normal. The itching is now much less frequent at the 24 hour mark..and I accomplished so much the next day!!!Also note..I had a bad infestation. My legs were retaining water and I started to have a rash on my high inner thighs. I big skin sensitivity was brewing. Apparently, it behaves like a virus injecting itself into your cells. The cells become infected and the bacteria multiply and infect other cells. (Inclusion)You cannot screw around with this. Demand or find a doctor that has a microscope and demand he test for gardnerella while you are there!!!If you want the name of this very special doctor (nice older man) who is very thorough in his exam - he does "everything" including colon cancer screening while you are there. Ask in this forum for it and I will try to reply soon.GO!!!!

  • I hope this might help you..I had this itch for over 9 years and I can't even remember how many doctors I've seen. None could figure out why. They prescribed everything from Diflucan, RX creams to steroid creams. Every test came back negative for yeast infection and my blood work was normal.About a year ago, my GYN referred me to a specialist in NYC. He collected a sample for testing and when it came back... it was YEAST!!! I asked him why all my other tests show negative. He explained that labs only tests for a few strands of yeast while his does a more extensive test. So no matter how many doctors you go to, they send your samples to the same labs and the results will be the same.He prescribed 600mg of Boric Acid suppositories compounded, 1 a day over 3 weeks. Finally after 9 years of suffering from this itch, it's over!! It cost me an arm and a leg but it was all worth it!! I hope you will find a cure for this.. good luck and don't give up!

  • I had a problem that sounds just like yours, and just like you, I saw several doctors and they all ran several tests and found nothing. The answer was simple and ironic. It was stress. I have always had high stress in my life and it seems to always manifest physically, but never like this before. It is ironic because as stress was causing the problem, it also was making it a whole lot worse.Good luck... don't scratch!
