For several years I have been experiencing unexplained flushing. It is my chest and neck. I have been checked for carcinoid syndrome and had extensive blood work to see if it was possibly menopause and they both came back negative. My family doctor is also confused and puzzled by this. It happens for no apparent reason and there have been times that I experienced panic attacks also.
This is very embarrassing and finally brought me to tears last night while in the doctors office. I'm at my wits end. I don't want to go to social gatherings because of this.
Has anyone experienced this and had success at getting it treated?
I'm desperate!!

Has anyone experienced this and had success at getting it treated?I'm desperate!!I too have unexplained flushing and have been tested for carcinoid syndrome(my levels are only slightly elevated). I am in my forties so I too was checked for menopause, negative. A dermatologist believed my body was releasing histamine(although not always detectable by the blood tests) and they put me on an antihistamine called Xyzal. I was shocked, after a year of trying everything else, that it worked! They don't have any idea why, but it did. I have been free of flushing for a year now! Just to let you know, I have recently been a patient at John's Hopkins. They still don't know why this is working. I take 1 pill at night and don't have the side effects that most antihistamines give me(sleepiness, jitters, etc). It takes a couple of weeks to feel the full effect. Hope this helps, Good Luck!

  • Any update on the status of this drug working for you?

  • I've been taking it for about three months now and it does seem to be working. I have seen a few situations of flushing but it doesn't seem to be as much. I plan on taking it for at least six months. Thanks for asking.

  • I would be interested in hearing if either of you have tried zyrtec instead of xyzal? Zyzal is actually just a derivative of zyrtec and the two drugs are very similar. It sounds like both of the above posts are having mastocytosis related skin issues, considering the antihistamine worked. Out of curiosity, did either of you have hives or telangiectasias (broken blood vessels) as a result of your skin manifestations? Thanks. I am also having flushing and am trying to find the cause of it. Zyrtec has seemed to produce some relief. If neither of you have tried zyrtec, you may want to consider it, as it is over the counter and tends to be much cheaper than xyzal. Both have similar active ingredients.

  • About three or four years ago I went to see a dermatologist and he said it was Rosacea but it continued to get worse. It looked like hives but the weird part is it only appears on my neck and chest, it's doesn't appear anywhere else. With my insurance it's only $5 a month for a 30 day supply which isn't bad. If you find out anything else please let me know.
