alright. well im a 16 year old girl (almost 17 at this point) and have been getting sudden, severe chest pain since christmas of 2004. The first night i got them, my mother called 911 and they thought i was having a heart attack. an ambulance came and stabilized me, then we drove to the hospital in our own car. they did a ecg when we got there, and all seemed normal. they gave me steriods and i was okay for about 6 months. then the pain came back. it's a sharp stabbing pain between my breasts which feels like a knife, puncturing my skin and going all the way through my chest and out my back. sometimes i won't have the pain for weeks or a month, then it will come back, sometimes for as many as 5 hours at a time. at this point ive been to the emergency room 4 times and the doctors told me not to come back, because there's nothing they can do. ive had a cat scan, 3 ecgs, a gall bladder scan, endoscopy, 2 ultrasounds, blood work, and ive seen a pediatric cardiologist. they found out my gallbladder wasn't working right and removed it. yet ive still had the pain. does anybody have a clue what could be wrong, or any suggestions ... please, it's very hard to live a teenage life when you don't want to go out due to the pain. please please help

  • My dear, listen to me, and hear what I am telling you. You have GERD. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease, a form of heartburn, but without the sour heartburn taste. I always described the pain like.......... have you ever swollowed a big ball of air by accident, and it gets stuck in your chest for a couple seconds until you burped it back up? It kinda hurt. Well it's alot like that, but 10xs the pain, and you cant burp it up. I had that pain for a long time and Drs. had no idea. It would show up for no reason one day, last a couple hours, then go away on its own. The next time it would show up it would last 15 minutes. I can go months without having it, or I can go a couple days without getting it. Antacids like tums, rolaids, and the such don't and never did work for me. Tagament, and prilosec didn't work either. The only thing that helped was a prescription for Omeprazole. One home remedy I have for it, and it sometimes worked, (befor I got the prescription) was that I would eat mustard, (alot, 3 mouthfulls at least), and bread until it went away. Sounds stupid, but it worked. Also salt n vinigar chips helped some times too. Things that would cause me to get this GERD chest related pain was...... Powdered drinks such as lemonaide, and ice teaSoda that got warm like Coke, and PepsiOrange JuiceWaterTaco BellSpicy FoodsLaying down too soon after eatingRamen NoodlesTomatoesOnions, I love onions on tuna too, but had to stop eating it.Spaghetti sauceChinese foodCoffeeAlcoholic beverages Thats what caused mine. I'm sure i'm forgetting some, but it's a start. See, if you have this pain, (from what I understand ) it's one of 2 things. 1. You're either producing too much acid, or2. You're not producing enough acid The times it went away with mustard, or sant n vinigar chips is cause I wasn't producing enough acid. I suplimented the acid with the vinigar in mustard or in the chips. It didn't work every time mind you. If not treated it can eventually lead to cancer. The acids burn away your esophogus lining. Good luck, I'm pretty sure, (from what you're describing) that this post will help you tremendously. Brian.

Brian. thank you tremendously for the post but actually im quite sure it's not that. 1) the pain has no correlation with what i eat or drink. (done food journals for month and found nothing) and 2) they've tried every acid reflux med there is out there. not a single change with my chest pain. also, the pain comes at all hours of the day, even on days where ive eaten nothing. once again i must say thank you, but they've already eliminated this cause. they've also eliminated gallbladder (its not there anymore lol) heart and lung issues.

  • I didn't see in your first poat anything about acid related tests. 1. What makes you so sure it's not food related? 2. As I stated, no acid related items worked for me either, until I got a prescription for omeprazole. And you haven't tried that, cause they wouildn't prescribe it to you unless they suspected GERD. I mean, for you to shoot down so quickly what might be a simple solution to your problem, is comming off as if you don't really want it to be that simple, or sorry to say, made up.

  • Just remember this post 5 years from now when you were positive it wasn't food related cause A doctor told you. With me, there were 3 primary care doctors, 2 er doctors, and a shrink that all assured me that they "couldn't find anything", "nothing was wrong", "it's nothing", "it's anxiety", befor I found a primary care dr that actually cared about what I was saying, and listened to me as if I was actually a person, and not just some number befor their lunch break. She said it was GERD. I said I don't, nor never had heartburn, or acid reflux problem. She gave me a prescription 7 years ago, and I never took it. I never took it casue she never tested me for acid reflux, and I had no signs of heartburn. Sooooooo I thought she was a loony, and I didn't take them. Sooooooooooo 7 more years of chest pain, and I finally said to myself, "what if it was GERD". I went to my new primary care doctor, and told him I was once diagnosed with GERD, and that I needed a new prescription for it. He filled it, I took them, and I never had that chest pain again. Imagin that. Years of pointless pain just cause I didnt wanna listen. You get wiser and smarter as you get older. But hey, thats my story. You were told it wasnt related, so be it. Sorry, I thought I could help.

  • Yeah, its always described differently. I described it my way. You yours. I had pain just like your description as well. ill try but honest... they've told me its not that and ive seen 6 local doctors and 3 specialists, one from the university of minnesota. again, i will try and i DO appreciate your responses, i hope you didn't think i was just shoving you off. its just that ive been told it's not this so many times that i just want to find out what it is. im sick of missing things because of it. i missed countless hours of school activities because of it. again, i appologise if i came off in an uncaring manner. im just sick of pain and want it to stop. thank you for your time and posts

  • I have to agree with brnbdry. GERDS does not have to be related to what you've eaten at all. It's the inability of the sphincter muscle at the top end of the stomach to keep stomach contents from rising into the esophagus. That can happen simply from bending over or lying down. I'm willing to bet that not one of your doctors has thought to do a barium swallow test, or an upper endoscopy, or a 24 hour ph probe study. And those are the only way that GERDS can be diagnosed.

  • I have had this same problem for 13 years. I take 2 omnaprazole a day and it doesn't stop the pain. I have never been diagnosed w/gerd. The teenager could have written my story. They removed my Galbladder, thought I had kidney stones. I've had every test from echo, motility study, ekg, MRI, CT scan, told me they thought it was panic attacks and more. plus I live with a GP. My pains frequently come at night or wake me up, but they can happen at any time of the day. It can happen if I am stressed or not stressed. I am helped by using a nitroglycerin sublingual spray. That has been the most successful in pain control but I have used nitrogen for 5 years and it doesn't always work anymore. It is like waiting to get hit by lightening, however, with lightening you see rainclouds, and hear thunder. There is no warning with these pains. They can last for hours or minutes. They actually feel like contractions. Any ideas appreciated.

  • Hi, Do you still have this problem? I have the same problems and have done all the same tests and now my doctor is considdering inflamation of the xiphoid process, a small bone that sticks out below the ribcage. He is sending me to another doctor who is going to inject anasthetic to see if that relieves the pain.Is that something you doctor has considdered?

  • I don't know if you still check these posts anymore but your story sounds exactly like me. I am only 25 and unable to work. Since Dec. 2010 it has been constant with fluctuation in the intensity of pain. I noticed everyone has been describing their pain differently; when my pain gets bad, it feels like someone got a giant wooden stake (like to kill a vampire or something) and they stabbed it thru my chest and it is sticking all the way thru & out my back. It feels as if I can't remove it and the longer I don't get at least pain releif, it spreads around my rib cage, and also up my neck and jaw. So far, they have only done esophageal tests and the other regulars: mri, ct, ekg, ultrasound of abdomin. I will have no insurense in about 8 months and I am terrified of never finding the answer. I feel that my quality of life is at an even zero. Any suggestions?
