Well i'm not sure if this is the right forum but it seems to be the cosesty because I need to knwo if i'm getting the right treatment. I am a 19 year old female and was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis when I was 17.
The thing is is that i'm not entirely sure if this is what I have.

Symtoms:Abdominal Cramping
Random bouts of very very bloody diarrhea
I'm always thirsty (but i've been like this my whole life an my grandmother is always worried i have diabetes because of it but the dotors always say i'm fine when they check me lol)

It doesn't seem to matter to much what I eat either. I mean I once ate a mexican taco style pizza and nothing happened and then another time I ate a peanut butter sandwhich and I ran to the bathroom at least 5 times in an hour.
I have had 3 colonoscopies and an endoscopy and in my opnion they just settled with ulcerative colitis cause it seemed the most likely. It just seems to me that if they were sure they wouldn't have needed to do so many tests. I was even slightly anemic for a while because of all the blood loss and now it's acting up again (lots of blood and cramping) after a few months of "remission".

Does this sound like ulcerative colitis or is there another possible diagnosis?

I am currently taking Asacol. 5 pills 3x a day but apparently it isnt doing much. So maybe i should change meds or maybe it's the wrong diagnosis?
Any suggestions?

  • This does sound like UC. It is also very common for it to start at a young age. Its not easy to diagnose any type of IBD, and many people have it for years before they finally get a diagnose. They have a great forum at www.healingwell.com that you should join. You should get lots of responses there.. Kiera

  • I have had several bouts of Ulcerative colitis and what is now diagnosed as Crohns disease. I have had multiple colonoscopies, endoscopes and capsule endoscopy. I was told that if I didn't take a very dangerous Immunosuppressant drug I would need surgery soon. I found a diet out of desperation and tried it . It is called the Specific Carbohydrate diet. You can search it on line. It is very restrictive at first. My bouts of 30+ bloody diarrhea a day stopped in 3 days. I followed it ,gradually adding items and after a year no recurrances and I am back to eating almost anything. I highly reccomend it. Keep taking your medicines just try it. The diet is listed at the website. I have been symtom free for 2 years.
