I have a grade 4 annular tear in my L4-L5 and I have grade 3 annual tear in my L5-S1 with a small disc protusion. I am in a TON of pain in my lower back. I have no pain in my legs. I have been to 2 neurologists. They say with rest the tear will heal itself and with physical therapy. My physical therapist said the tear can't heal itself and therapy will just get rid of the tension and spasms. Right now I am so stiff and in pain. I can;t work and I can't bend. I have been dealing with back problems for three years. About every 6 months it goes out when I try to run, jump, or lift and it puts me on my back for 1 week. Has anyone had tears without major bulging or ruptured disc? What do you recommend?

Normal doctor said bed rest and it will mend but after two weeks I went to an osteopath.he said it could not mend with the disc pushing the muscle fibres apart. He manipulated the disc back in and I was able to walk from his office. He gave me back exercises to strengthen those muscles to keep it from re-occuring.This was about twenty years ago and am still fine.I would recommend an osteopath but not a chiropracter.

  • Hate to be the bearer of bad news but I have those same torn discs. I've spent 4 years in pain, unable to work, go out, have fun or anything beside sit for non lengthy periods of time and lay down. Took 3 1/2 years to even get pain medications for it. I just had a discoplasty which seems so far to have relieved a great deal of the pain but I can easily blow out the disc or have nasty scar tissue. I hope you can get some good professional help cause physical therapy and rest will not heal it, whatsoever. Hopefully since you know what the problem is you won't have to wait as long as I.Good luck.
