During the past few weeks i have felt minor pain in my left big toe and just recently i looked at it more closely and determined it might be infected. There is a yellow-greenish soft spot on the bottom part of the nail and a little crust on the side which is the same color. What can i do to either relieve the pain, or completely get rid of it.

  • Hi Joe,If the infection is a fungus, it can be very difficult to get rid of. Often a systemic medicine is needed. If the infection is a normal bacterial infection, you might accomplish some success with home remedies. But the point is that you would do well to have a doctor tell you what kind of infection it is.You might find some pictures that you can compare your toe to, here:http://images.google.com/images?sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1B2RNFA_en___US207&q=toenail+infectionGood luck,Shula

  • I have been to a chiropodist in the past who was very knowledgeable. I don't know if they can prescribe, but he did wonders on my in-grown toenail. Do you have one near you?

  • Podiatrist is the same as Chiropodist. I was referred to one by my Int. Med. doc. Call your docs office and see if they can recommend a podiatrist.
