Throat Infection, Doctor Couldn't Help...

Hello. Recently, I suffered from an extremely painful throat infection. Upon seeing the doctor for this, I was given a round of Azithromycin and Tylenol 3, which took care of the pain and the infection symptoms. All tests done by my doctor returned negative, and she was unable to tell me what had caused the infection.

Ever since the infection cleared up, I have had a severe head cold, with sinus symptoms and SEVERE dehydration. This morning, I once again began having throat symptoms, and began producing blood in my sputum when expectorated, although I'm not sure if it is from my throat or nose. My sinus symptoms are alleviated when I take Sudephedrine, but the dehydration symptoms then become so severe that I no longer feel comfortable taking it. I have tried increasing my electrolyte intake, but it has not helped much.

Now, this information may be unrelated, but I feel that I should share in case it may be relevant. About a week before the initial throat infection, I performed fellatio on a new sexual partner. My doctor did not feel it was necessary to test for STD's at the time. Could this be related?

  • Although I can't say for sure whether it is related to the fellatio an STD screening couldn't hurt. If your doctor hesitates on doing the STD tests then visit your local planned parenthood or public health office and ask for an STD screening. Do you have any other previous history of illness or medical conditions? Even medical history you don't see as relevant may be useful. Do you have dry mouth? Any lesions, patches or blotches in your mouth or throat? Was the blood that was produced bright red or dark red like clotted blood? Was it frothy / foamy? Were you coughing hard when the blood was produced? Can you describe the throat pain that you experienced previously and that you're currently experiencing? Rate the pain on a scale of one to ten (ten being extreme) and describe it (dull, aching, sharp, scratchy, piercing, burning, throbbing, annoying, unbearable, etc..) Can you localize the sinus pressure / pain that you're experiencing or is it generalized and widespread? I don't want to be an alarmist but any time there is blood produced while coughing you have to consider the need to maintain a patent airway. If at any time your symptoms worsen and you produce blood you feel is excessive or bright red & frothy you need to be seen immediately by an emergency room.

  • Bumping this thread up...I hope someone might have an answer...If there are pustules on the tonsils you have to use an antibiotics, preferably penicillin. If there are no pustules you can use fexofenadine 60 mg daily for three days.

In fact, this is the longest I've been sick in years and years. As far as the sinus pain, it's very general. If I had to go with my gut feeling, I would say that the throat and sinus symptoms are unrelated, possibly just an extreme head-cold because of my weakened immune system. I don't know. That doesn't explain the dehydration, though. The throat symptoms the first time around included redness, bleeding, and pus produced in my tonsils, which were extremely swollen. My lymph nodes were enlarged, and eating, drinking, talking, swallowing, etc were nearly impossible for about 3 days until the antibiotic kicked in. On a scale of 1-10, this was a 10. The pain was unbearable until the antibiotic began to work, then dissipated almost immediately. Now, the redness in my throat has returned, and I am beginning to feel pain upon swallowing. I believe I misused the term "sputum" in my previous post. The blood produced upon coughing is not from my lungs, but from my throat or mucus from my nose when expelled. The reason I felt it important to mention the fellatio is that the timing was correct in both instances. I would understand not having any vaginal symptoms, as condoms were used, but both times my throat has felt like this, fellatio was performed sans-protection about 3 days before symptoms began to appear. It may be irrelevant, I don't know if you can even contract an STD from fellatio, but I figured any relevant info may help.

  • Dinah- You can indeed contract sexually transmitted diseases from fellatio. Gonorrhea, Herpes, HPV, Hepatitis C (and even HIV if there are open cuts present in the mouth) can all be contracted bi fellatio or cunnilingus. I would highly suggest getting an STD screening even if you see a general practitioner and your current sinus / throat issues are remedied. If the current cause of your sinus and throat pain is related to your previous infection then you should probably be seen by a physician. Your last sore throat was bacterial in nature and was alleviated with an antibiotic. It doesn't sound like your throat is as bad as it was the last time and the throat pain might be due to post-nasal drip if your sinuses are draining down the back of your throat. In the mean time I would skip the pseudoephedrine and try a saline nasal spray and a long term antihistamine such as loratadine (claritin). A saline nasal spray will help clear your sinuses and also hydrate them. Your bloody discharge may have been due to the pseudoephedrine overdrying your sinuses, alternatively it could be coming directly from the site of infection in your sinus cavity. Either way, good luck with your symptoms and I wish you well.

  • I will add that throat infections don't show up on STD screenings unless they are the site of the screening. I have known people to be completely "STD free" (had no symptoms in their throat and passed a vaginal and blood STD screening) pass on bacterial STDs such as Chlamydia and Gonorrhea to others.
