They look like stretch marks... but I've puzzled 3 doctors.

Okay, so I have what looks like stretch marks all over my legs. They first began on the inside of my knees and then on my hips. Then they started to spread and now the ones that were on the inside of my knees have reached my thighs and the ones of my hips are growing down to my thighs. They also reach all the way down almost to my ankles. I'm also starting to develop new marks on the inside of my thighs.

The reason I'm worried is because stretch marks aren't actually supposed to grow. These marks also hurt when pressed down on and I've had them for almost a year now and they are still very, very red!

Also, there is no reason for me to be developing stretch marks. I have not gained enough wait for them to appear as... obvious as they are! Nothing. They just came up.

I've seen my doctor, a dermatologist, and another dermatologist. Nobody knows what it is... but they decided they're going to send me to get laser surgery on April 30th.

It's only on my legs, too.

Does anyone know what this could POSSIBLY be?

  • I've never heard that stretch marks can't grow. In fact, if your body shape keeps changing then it would logically make sense that they WOULD grow. Have you been doing any kind of weight training of any sort with your legs? Have you gained ANY weight whatsoever since this began? Everyone is different and so it's possible your skin is just more delicate and prone to stretch marks. You might also want to go to an infectious disease specialist, or ask a regular doctor to check for any abnormalities in blood. Do you have diabetes by any chance?

I mean, I know they'll appear, but growing? Or spreading? My doctors say that they haven't seen that.Nope, not really. I got into tennis about a month ago... but these marks have been here for almost a year. And, no, I don't have diabetes but it does run in my family history. My mother has it.

  • Are they purplish in color? If so check out Cushing's Disease. Striae (purplish stretch marks) are one of the major signs.

  • Are they purplish in color? If so check out Cushing's Disease. Striae (purplish stretch marks) are one of the major signs. They are pretty much purplish stretch marks. They range from light pink to dark red to purple. My doctor decided to run some blood tests and a 24-hour urinary free cortisol level. Apparently, it wasn't Cushing's Disease, thankfully. Aghh.

  • It is good that the first round of tests was negative, but keep cushings in the back of your mind. If you look it up on the internet you will see that it can cycle so if you are have any of the other symptoms then when they are the worst is the time to beg for another 24hr urine. Good Luck

  • This is to the first guy that posted an image link, i have marks very similar to those, though not that advanced i would say. Say coloring, except they seem to curve inwards more, and are sort of jagged in places. They are also on my outer thighs, sides and inner upper arm, both arms. Do you know what they are?

  • I started getting stretch markes (White, not red) on the inside of my legs at the knee, when I was 11. Maybe younger. Then they went all the way up my thighs and when I was 18 they had reached to my lower back. I didn't get them after that. The latest ones looked like a scar. I've never had much of a growth spurt and I was always really skinny. I am 25 now.Yes we had an outdoor cat when I was a baby til I was 17. And now I have birthmarks appearing all over my body wherever I (Ew this is gross) pop a zit. My dermatologist swears you can't create a birthmark that way but I swear it's really happening! Anybody else have ANY of these symptoms? I want to know if this is Bartonella

  • I have the same kinds of marks and I am still getting them. I have also been to 3 different doctors with no answer. I am being sent to Georgetown University Hospital for more testing and will post information if they find anything. I wish you all the best in dealing with whatever this seems to be.
