I went to a yoga/pilates class this morning and sometime during the session I noticed that my left calf felt numb. I thought it "fell asleep" when it was in a raised leg pose. But it hasn't gone away. The class finished at 10 and it's now 3:00 and I still feel numb. The weird thing is that there is no pain, i can use my leg fine and I only notice it's numb when i touch them. It's as if the skin is shot up with novacaine. The muscles feel fine.

I've gone for a walk and that hasn't helped, I've massaged it and that hasn't helped.

Any suggestions?

  • I got exactly the same thing today (numb skin on my left shin and knee), after a Pilates class! At some point my boyfriend had that, and it got away after a while, not sure what the cause of his skin numbness was, though. It might just be a coincidence that we both had that after a Pilates class, but maybe not... I unfortunately don't know what the cause is, but I really don't think it's serious... Keep posted!

  • I just searched "skin numb on left shin" and found this. Mine started yesterday after a Pilates class also! I also had a 10 minute massage after class and wasn't sure which caused this. How long did yours last?

  • Oh wow! I got sciatica for the 1st time about 3 years ago and shockingly (or at least I'm shocked that I found this) I was doing Pilates! Obviously I stopped the Pilates and had to go to Physical Therapy because my sciatica was that bad and I could hardly walk. Well, it's about 3 years later and my left calf (skin) is still numb and has been ever since. I didn't think much of it because I can walk and other than numbness it causes me no problems. Should I assume something is wrong? Again, I know sciatica from Pilates caused it but the sciatica was painful and although the skin on the left calf is numb it's not painful. hmmm, I hope that's not bad that I've been igoring it for all this time. I'll keep checking this link.

  • I got a numb shin after pilates too. I think I felt the nerve zipping up my lower leg but I thought it was my trousers causing it because I was on my back and my task was to lift up my leg in the air.Went to see a doc and was told it was a nerve problem on my fifth lumbar (sciatic) So what can we do?

  • I have a numb shin today, sounds quite like your symptoms. I went to Urgent Care and the doctor there said it is likely neurapraxia, a condition in the nerve system which can cause numbness. He said people can get it from doing yoga when they sit in one position for a long time, or if they fall asleep drunk with their arm or leg in an odd position. I took a 4 hour test this morning so he thought it was probably related to that. He said normally neurapraxia goes away in about 12 hours, and if it lasts longer, you should see your doctor.

  • I just searched "skin numb on left shin" and found this. Mine started yesterday after a Pilates class also! I also had a 10 minute massage after class and wasn't sure which caused this. How long did yours last?Hello,I have this also. It began yesterday.. I have vascular disease in my legs some of it due to family genetics and some due to poor lifestyle for many years. My body builds plaque and it strangles my veins....so to speak. I never had high cholesterol but used to smoke for many years which makes the plack build double time. Anyway, I lost a toe and have now a stint in my lower aorta. I watch everything.. exercise, eat clean, and do not smoke any longer. I just yesterday felt a pinch in my leg.. I thought from working out the day before.... then during the day noticed just the TOP only of my leg numb then my foot too. It is so weird. I am making an apt to see my vascular doctor and my R/A doctor too. I'm not sure what is going on either. SO......if anyone reads this please give us all your thoughts. It cant be a good thing.

  • I had the exact same thing happen to me 8 days ago from a pilates/yoga class. My shin is still numb! Has anyone gotten any clear diagnosis and remedies for their doctor yet? And does anyone have any tips on how to make it go away? Furthermore, have the doctors told you to discontinue pilates/yoga/excercise while the numbness is still there? I'd really appreciate any advice!-Claire

  • This is so weird. I have the exact same symptoms. Same story. Happened after a pilates class almost two weeks ago. I wasn't worried until I saw my primary care physician who implied it could be M.S. I have an appointment with a neurologist in a couple of days and have been worried sick. I'm just hoping for some other explanation. My numbness hasn't really gone away yet. It's odd that we have the exact same story. Same leg even! Wish me luck. I just want some peace of mind!

  • I've got the problem but not on my knee. I had being doing pilates for awhile and then I noticed the shin thing after coming back from dinner. I just thought it had something to do with the stockings but it hasn't gone away. I'm going to the doctor about something else on Sat, I think I better mention this. When I googled the symptoms I didn't realise it seems to be a common thing.

  • Ok same symptoms left shin though not knee. Over a week now. Noticed after an aerobics class that included pilates! I went to the doctor and am trying an anti-inflammatory RX for possible swelling around L5. Then I will need to get xray and or chiro and Physical therapy if it doesn't clear up. Can anyone offer any info as to how and how long this was resolved??

  • Wow - I certainly didn't expect to find my exact problem being discussed on a forum. In fact I only searched 'numb skin'I digress - I have had numb left (left) shin and partial knee for approx 8 months. Finally went to GP couple of weeks ago. He was bamboozled and has booked me in with a neurologist so that I can then see a nerve specialist.Apart from the skin being numb I do have times when the lower half of my left leg feels heavy or numb as in pins and needles. Sometimes when I walk I can 'feel' my leg (left) where as my right leg is 'invisible'.I must add I have never partaken in Pilates or really any form of organised fitness......Will update as and when there is someting to addMaz

I am 65 yrs old, with 3 active grandkids and I still sit on my knees when folding laundry. I am not happy about this condition, but I am flattered to be in the company of much younger "suffrers". I will be glad to post any information I get on the subject.

  • My right shin has also been numb for the past 6-7 days!! I recently have found my self falling asleep in weird positions and waking up to find my leg, arm, hand, etc.. asleep. This goes away after a couple of minutes, but my shin is still numb! I lift weights 3 days a week, but i dont think that this is the cause. Im pretty sure it happened while I was asleep. It almost seems like its just the outer layer of skin that is numb. I am a nursing student so I assessed my leg for circulation and it seems normal. There is no muscle abnormalities, the hot/cold receptors are still fine, and i can even feel a pin ****k on my shin. It just feels like im touching someone elses leg when I put my hand on it.Im beginning to get a little worried that this may be permanent :(. Do any of you all have any information on how long yours lasted, or if its still there?

  • [Mine subsided after a week or so, but there is still a very slight residual numbness if I LOOK FOR IT. It doesn't come and go, but I do experiience it when I have been in a certain position for a period of time. At 65, that could be any position, but mostly when in a pinched or restricted position ie: sitting on my knees on the floor or grandkids sitting on my lap for 1/2 hour or more. Hope this helps... It seems this condition is pretty widespread. Somebody has to have an answer somewhere, you would think.

  • Mine started about three days ago. Right above my right knee cap till about a quarter way up my thigh. For a couple hours.... a thin strip running across my lower inner thigh today. I have no pain and the use of my leg is fine. I however do not do any strenuous activities beyond my daily cleaning, laundry, chasing after my son. So i was wondering if it is somthing I should see my doctor about?

  • I went to shave my legs the other morning and realized I really wasn't feeling the razor on my right shin. That was a few days ago and I still don't really feel it. I say it is like after you go to the dentist and your mouth is numb, you know you are touching your face but you can only really feel the pressure. I work out a few times a week, I wondered if it was like a shin splint gone wrong. I also wonder if it is from crosing my legs at work, or how I sleep...Bottom line, I don't know WHY my shin is numb, but it sure is scary. My husband things I am allergic to something or latic buildup from working out. Not sure....I don't want to pay for a load of tests for nothing, I am not in pain, but I don't want to loose a leg beacuse I ignoried it....What to do
