Hi there! I am a 30 year old female. For about a month now, I have had swelling in my lower right leg. No pain, only pressure and if I elevate the leg, the swelling goes down. I have been to the doctor 5 times already and no one can tell me what is wrong. I have already had an ultrasound, an x-ray and a bone scan....we have eliminated blod clots and fractures. I still do not know what is wrong. Can anyone figure me out? Thank you for your help. J

  • Causes of unilateral lower-extremity swelling include venous and arterial abnormalities, lymphedema, infection, trauma, and neoplasms.I'm assuming your doc has ruled all of these out?Are you certain you haven't injured it in some way? What's your salt intake like? How swollen is it (does the size or exact location of the edema vary)? Are you commonly on your feet a majority of the day? Sorry for all the questions, trying to help. :)

  • You might have chronic venous insufficiency in that one leg. That would not have shown up on any of the tests.

  • Thank you taking the time to suggest your diagnosis. The systems do not quite match, though. My Ortho indicated that blood flow, bone and muscle are looking all normal....and she specifically mentioned there are no signs of vericose veins, which is one system chronic venous insufficiency carries, another system I do not have is pain. It is the most interesting thing I have ever seen. Now, to answer your question about sodium...well, I do drink anywhere from 2-4 sodas a day (this is my substitute for coffee) and I actually thought this could be a possibility. Some days I can walk from one side of our office building multiple times and throughout the day and then there are times I am sitting at my desk for long periods of time as well, which both situations I find causing my leg to swell. I went to my 5th appointment today to confirm all tests came back normal and my leg has no signs of any problems...besides the swelling. My next step is too have an annual physical and request blood testing and check my liver and kidney function. I feel my body is trying to tell me something is just not right and it might not be the leg but another problem that may get worse if not figured out soon and hopefully not overlooked by doctors I am trusting to help and figure out my leg mystery before I go broke looking for an answer ~
