17 weeks ago I had a casual relationship involving oral sex both ways. After a few days I felt a little sore in my penis and sore throat and immediately got myself checked out (10 days post exposure) at my GUM clinic (urethral swabs/throat/bloods). Tests all -ve for STDs BUT microscopical results showed indications of pus cells (polymorphs?) suggesting inflammation due to infection. Antibiotic was given (4 tablets Azithromycin in 1 go). No improvement a few days later so a repeat of same antibiotic given but over a week plus a week of metrondiazole.

I was also given a tetracyclin based antibiotic early on - but cant recall what it was. I just had to stay out of sunshine.

After a couple weeks no improvement and was given another 5 day course of Azithro and Metrondiazole. All swabs done at GUM visits tests remained negative - apart from persistent presence of polymorphs. Eventually one test showed these polymorphs had gone. BUT I continued to feel chronically tired/run down and irritation to my urethra but now with swollen neck / jaw glands on left side - which at times felt tlike needles being jabbed into them under jaw.

I revisited the GUM clinic and discussed with the consultant. They said they'd thrown everything at this infection and therefore not a STD. I was told the NSU may have led to nerve endings in urethra being over sensitised and was prescribed a drug to counteract this. ive avoided taking it so far - it is an anti depressant drug but is also used (as in my case) to desensitise nerves.

I have avoided taking this drug simply because my neck glands are still swollen and my throat permanantly sore and the fact these symptoms came on shortly after the ones in my urethra suggest they must be related. I still have a permanant dull ache in low groin/penis and now I have regular mild headaches. The consultant insists that anything going on up in my throat and neck is nothing to do with STDs. I went back at 3 months and tested for HIV and Syph and all came back -ve. I was told this is conclusive that i dont have any STD and that I should take the drug to desenitise my irritational pain in urethra. My worry is it could mask something else going on?????.Im not paranoid hnest - but thsi really isnt in my head - I really do feel ill. I asked the consultatnt if the 3 month result could still be too soon for Syph/HIV and he said no - if I'd of had it the results would be very posiitve by 3 months. I am not immunocompromised to the best of my knowedge (im not diabetic/on drugs etc ). Why am I still so fatigued and why does my urethra/groin feel so irritated still and why is my throat sore/glands in neck left and now somethime right sore - are there any other stds they could have missed?

Im coming upto 40, non smoker, light social drinker. Otherwise in reasonable health.

No idea what to do. I finally went to see my own family doc recently. I didn't tell them about the std clinic since the consultants and docs I saw were so insistent that I've not got a STD. My family doc said I should come back in a couple weeks for bloods to check - but I really don't want to go and for them to find an STD that the GUM clinic should have picked up.

Any advice - I'm sooooo scared/worried?

  • 97% of people will develop detectable HIV antibodies within 3 months, but the remaining 3% can take up to 6 months, so you HAVE to be tested again. There are many other causes of swollen lymph nodes from something as simple as mono to serious conditions like cancer however, so definitely go and see you doctor.

I saw my own doc and had bloodwork done. They dont know ive been to a std clinic as I dont want to talk to them about this. Explained all symptoms. All bloods came back OK. I should feel ok - but actually I think Im gettin worse. Now getting headaches, feel like got a permanent cold for weeks and weeks, swollen neck still, and constant persistant ache in testicles and low pubic area.Im soooooooo confused. The consultants in STD clinic insist I have nothing. I Googled symptoms and kept coming up with Syphillis, which ive been tested for and def -ve - but also a very rare STD called Lymphogranuloma Venereum (LGV). I was with a asian partner and this is meant to be more common in that part of the world, but no idea if they could have had it. Also, if i did get it from oral sex, how are they ever going to know if I do have it? Its like Chlymidia, but much worse, with symptoms like Syphillis. I'm VERY VERY worried. I have had loads of antibiotics for 1 week durations a discussed above, but they seem t suggest 3 week sessions of Doxycycline. Wouldnt my treatments above have sorted thisI guess I have to insist i speak to my consultatant again - but I think he wants me to take the Nortriptyline i was given to stop me feeling pain in groin - something he said was not std but over active nerves following NSU treatment. I havent taken yet as I am concerned it will mask what ever real problem is. HELP- serious making myself ill here with worry

  • they generally don't check for everything, like HPV or Herpes 1/2 (you can have it without a rash)..could be something like that or a variant of gonorreah that is close but not measurable. You may want to try alternative medicine at this point just to get relief.

My throat is still sore, but now so is the tip of my tongue, my neck is also sore and periodically painful under left jaw, but in last week I have also got pains/swellin in my armpit. I am getting headaches, and vision is a little blurry and joint pains.I went to the clinic again. I laid everything out. They said all the tests Id had done for STDs previously, coupled with all the antibiotics meant they were 100% sure I had no STD. However, I also asked about something Id read called LGV which gives many of the symptoms I have - but they said my Chlymidia results were all previously ngative. I argued that these were samples taken from my genitals, I am having more issues in my throat and neck. They agreed to retest for all STDs and swabbed my throat -but I cant find anything that tells me if this form of test is suitable for LGV as it is a bug that lives inside your cells. I am waiting for results, but still unsure if they are missing something! They test for Syph, Chlymidia, HIV, Gon. All prelimiary results done in clinic while I waited this time showed my urethra was clear of any polymorphs again which means there is no infection i gatehr (unlike when I first went in). It is now ~18 weeks and I need a diagnosis and resolution. Its hugely affecting my life. The Doc thinks some of symptoms are through stress and guilt of my exposure. But these are real symptoms - not in my head. The doc was so insistent that he used term '100% certain no STDs' . Slowly going mad.

  • Im now so fed up - Ive been back to clinic again 2x and asked if this could be LGV - I have been told by 2 consultants categorically No and they insist LGV doesnt cause my kind of symptoms following my exposure.. Yet despite this all info on the web says LGV can be spread orally with gland involvement. I have had intermittent swollen glands in jaw/nec/armpit for weeks but they always subside when im at the docs. My liver area is uncomfortable and penis feels sore. ALL tests repeated again and I asked them to incl throat swab. Everything -ve again. I am at a loss as where to go now as I feel so tired and miserable. I need a diagnosis but no one seems to be bale to help.

  • maybe some kind of yeast infection. Have you heard of Candida? its an overgrowth of yeast in the body that causes lots of problems that leave people frustrated with lack of diagnosis...
