10 months ago, my dad started getting these random "reactions" where his lips (mainly his upper lip) would get incredibly swollen. So swollen that it is sausage-like and I cannot even recognize him. It looks very exaggerated, but it would go away after a few days.

At first we thought it might have been a food allergy but he's gone to so many of those tests and nothing's come up. He's avoided foods that he ate prior to getting the swollen lip each time but it's never it. (e.g. one time he got it at night after a lobster meal, so he avoided lobster... but then one time he ate it and there were no problems)... It doesnt seem to be an environmental thing because he's had it at home (pacific northwest) and on trips in north america and asia. It comes up so randomly and quite often but it would go away. It bothers all of us a lot to not know what it is.

He's in his 60s and is retired. High blood pressure sometimes but otherwise very healthy and well and lives a balanced lifestyle.

Would really appreciate anyone who has any ideas / advice / experience / stories / answers. Thank you in advance!! :)

  • Tell him to get a blood test for herpes simplex 1; it's very common...other than he is having an allergic reaction to something, it sounds like cold sores.

  • Hi, I do not know what causes this to happen, but I am replying to your message to share my own experience. My mother used to get exactly the same thing, in her lips and hands in particular. This also happened unexpectedly, and fairly rarely. It was back in the sixties and seventies (she died in 1980, no connection to this condition), but I do recall that she used to take anti histamines for it. I cannot remember whether they helped!10 months ago, my dad started getting these random "reactions" where his lips (mainly his upper lip) would get incredibly swollen. • Could be an allergy to cats. My neice has something similiar and her tongue swells and eyes get itchy even if she doesn't directly come into contact with a cat. Also look around the home for anything new that could have a fibre that might cause this to happen. A new couch, jumper or blanket maybe. Good luck. • Hi Im 14 and was eating a Greggs Cheese Savoury (:o) when my top lip started to tingle. I thought nothing of it and kept eating. Afterwards, I looked in the mirror to find my top lip extremely swollen a white/light pink colour like mentioned above. This has never happened before. I had an allergy test a while back with no results found and my top lip is quite numb. I have excema but i dont think that this has anything to do with it. No make up used except lip gloss but i hadnt used that for about 3 days. Used vaseline and blistex but still there! Please help I look awful!
