My right cervical lymph node is swollen to 2x3 cm and has been for about 3 months, it is not painful. 1 month ago the lymph nodes behind my right ear began to swell and become painful. I went to the doctor and was prescribed a general antibiotic, which caused the lymph nodes behind my ear to normalize and may have shrunk the swollen node in my neck slightly. 2 weeks after finishing the antibiotics the cervical lymph node is beginning to swell slightly, and my neck is very slightly uncomfortable from time to time. I have a tooth which is broken below the gum line. I now sometimes experience a very mild pain in my chest, under my collar bone, on the same side with the swollen lymph node. My face also seems to be slightly swollen. Any ideas on what might be causing this? I am thinking it is an infection resulting from my broken tooth, which i will have extracted once I am able. Thanks in advance.

  • You are most likely correct, and the lymphatic enlargement is due to an infection of the cracked tooth. The most common cause of this type of infection is the strep viridians that occupy the mouth. You may want to try a more targeted antibiotic for a longer period (i guess it depends on what you took the first time though). Fixing the tooth is absolutely the most definitive way of correcting the problem permanantly. I would warn you to be careful, the bacteria that are normal for everyone to have in their mouth can cause serious problems if they are allowed to enter into systemic circulation (through injury, piercing, trauma, etc). They have been known to do particularly nasty damage to heart valves on occasion. It's not the most likely scenario in the world, especially if you are otherwise healthy, but it is something to consider.
