My 4 year old daughter has had problems with severe sweaty hands and feet. She has had this issue since birth but her doctor has not found any issue that would cause it, although she has not really looked into it much. Is there any condition that would cause this chronic problem?

  • The condition is called hyperhidrosis. They don't know the cause, but they think that when it happens on the hands and feet such as your daughter (palmoplantar hyperhidrosis), it may be an over-activity of the autonomic nervous system. In other words, her body feels and reacts to stress differently than some. It doesn't have to be 'stress' the way another might feel stress...many things are stressful to the nervous system that we don't cognitively perceive as stress. I would recommend teaching her cognitive ways of handling stress. Yes, this can happen in a 4 yr old. The better she can handle what her body perceives as stress mentally, the more likely the physical issue will diminish.Talk to your doc and see what he/she says. I am not a doctor, but this is what I was taught as an LMT about the condition. Best wishes to you and your daughter!
