I am a 19 year old uni student.....just yesterday i was going to lie down on the bed, when all of a sudden i felt so weird that i dnt know how to explain. My limbs felt like lead, it was as though they were weighing a ton , almost like one's gums feel when the dentist freezes them....
and i couldnt even move at all..i had to pinch various parts of my body just to convince myself that they were there....and then i had really difficulty in breathing..it was as thought my windpipe was getting obstructed and there was extreme numbness...i was getting somehwta dizzy as well but not blacking out entirely either
i went to the doctor and he said that i have to "wait" and see if more of it happens and then come back..im too scared to wait cause i live all alone in the uni dorms and my family isnt here either and no one close enough that i can contact...
i have been eating, drinking fluids regularly and am hydrated enough, im not in too much stress either and dnt have a past history either...
it was so bad yesterday that i couldnt even sleep the whole night...it has happened about 3 times so far....and im really confused...
any ideas, advice and suggestions would be much much welcome.
thanks a lot.

  • Go to a new doctor who will run some tests. You need a complete physical and need to see a specialist. How is your diet? Have you had recent falls and need to see a chiropractor? Are you being exposed to carbon monoxide (borrow someone's detector for the night) in your home or do you have a bad exhaust system in your car? Gas leaks in the stove? Call the gas company to check for leaks.

  • Have you recently left home, changed your job, had a big event in your life? These can be classic symptoms of stress or worry (especially the numbness, breathlessness, sudden loss of energy) - it can be a panic attack, which won't harm you, but can be terrifying. It is a vague possibility it was an allergic reaction, eg did you have any different food, stuff with nuts in is the classic. But since you've had it 3 times, this could point to stress. The possibility of Carbon Dioxide poisoning is plausible, do get your flat checked immediately, even if the boiler/comi/gas fires are down stairs. You are probably imagining something terrible is the cause of this, this is a natural response so I recommend you talk to another GP ASAP in the same practice or register elsewhere; this will alleviate your anxiety, tell them your concerns, most GPs are very good & keen to help.

  • you need to get referred to a neurologist quickly! You have symptoms of guillain barre syndrome and can be life threatening with respiratory problems. good luck!
