strange bladder issues

Off and on for a year now I have been having INTENSE bladder spasms only at night when my body starts to relax. They are so intense that I cannot sleep at all some nights. Common medications like AZO do nothing. I've been to the doctor twice and both times I was diagnosed with a simple UTI. The Cipro and Bactrim helped for a few days, then the symptoms returned before I had even finished the antibiotics. I will go for stretches with no problems only to have the spasms return again. I have noticed that carbonated beverages aggravate symptoms, which makes me believe that I may have innerstitial cystitis. But why only at night?! I am fine all day, but as soon as I start to get ready for bed and start to relax the intense pressure returns.
Please help! I am miserable! I will go to a Urologist, but I am scared it will be another dead end. Any clues would be appreciated.

  • Hi,I had the same problems for 3 years. I was told many times that it was just a UTI.It turned out I was just really sensitive to certain products. Like scented body washes and certain foods. I kept a diary of what I ate and then any symptoms for a few days after eating it. I could then narro down what made me worse and cut them out. I would try this but also try to see a specialist as this could be lidney related. Is there any history of kidney problems in your family??

  • Why in the heck wouldn't you go straight to a urologist. By the way, what do you mean by "I will go for stretches"? Is someone dilating your bladder who is not a urologist? Sorry to be so blunt.

  • Oh...now that I re-read your sentence, I see what you mean. Duh! Go to the drug store and get some Uro-stat (Pyridium). (available over the counter). It is a urinary/bladder anesthetic taken in pill form and will start to work in about half an hour. It will dye your urine orange for a while. So, if it clears up the pain, then you will know it is definitely a urology problem and need to go to a urologist. Early treatment may help you if it is Interstitial Cystitis.

I am definitely sensitive to certain things. I try to steer clear of sodas and drinks that are acidic.
