Splits in side of mouth

I have began to suffer from large splits in the side of my mouth for the last few weeks. The side seems to alternate each time I get them but both sides are the same. They are very painful and it hurts to eat, drink and talk when I have them. When healing they scab which is very irritating.
While I was working in Ghana a few months ago I had a very bad rash on my face ( just from heat ) and I think that may be something to do with it as I have never had them before. Also it is unlikely it is cold sores as I unfortunately have genital herpes and have never had cold sores on my face.
Any advice with regards to what this may be or a healing method would be greatly appreciated.
