Sore, swollen lips that won't heal?

I woke up with swollen lips last Friday morning. I believed that it was an allergic reaction from taking two different sinus medication the evening before.

However, I thought they would be fine the next day, but it's Tuesday and they haven't gotten any better. I wake up in the morning and they're crusty, cracked, burning, and swollen. I have used five different lip balms: Vaseline lip therapy, Blistex medicated lip ointment, Lip Vitamins, Carmex, and a prescription lip ointment called Zovirax (that actually expired in December).

These do not seem to be helping me whatsoever. I can't kiss my fiancee, I can't go five minutes without applying some kind of balm, and it hurts to open my mouth to eat. This paired with the hellish time I'm having with my sinuses is making me just miserable. And I don't know when I'll be able to see my doctor as I have finals this week and it's a bit hectic.

Can anyone help me? :(

All she could think of was to stop using everything but the Vaseline and to take Benedryl, but this isn't helping. I'm getting desperate. :(Any second opinions would be much appreciated!

  • Hi,I have had the same symptoms for the last 3 weeks. I found a website called Case Challenge and they diagnosed it as erythematous burning lips and said it was a fungas infection. I had some polysporin and put it on immediately. At first it made my lips feel numb now they feel the best they felt in 3 weeks. They really recommended an anti-fungal creme. Hope this helps.

  • Do you use Splenda?I had sore, swollen lips for several months and could not think of anything that had changed in my diet or other products that might cause an allergy. Then last week I read on another forum about Splenda sometimes causing these symptoms as well as others such as rashes, hives, swollen face, swollen eyelids etc. I had not thought of SPlenda as a possible culprit since I had been using it for several years before my symptoms appeared. But I decided to test it. I stopped using Splenda on Fri 9/4. By Sunday 9/6 my lips were at least 50% better. By Tues 9/8, they were almost back to normal. They felt so much better than they had in months. I am thrilled. My lips had been getting progressively worse and worse over the last few months. Except somedays they would seem to be getting better only to get worse again. I'm thinking now that because I didn't use Splenda every day that perhaps the days they seemed to be a little better were following days that I didn't use Splenda and then they would get worse when I used Splenda again. I did not keep track of this because at the time I did not suspect Slenda. Google "Splenda" and "swollen sore lips" and read about others with this problem.

I tried to look up the website Case Challenge and was directed to a company that sells brief cases. Do you remember the site address? If so, would you post it please?

  • I have almost the identical issue and it's been 4 months. It started after a CT scan and I thought I had a reaction to the dye or Baryum. NOTHING helps, they burn, itch, are red, swollen, wake up crusty. I've seen allergists, dermatologists, general doctors, any advice on things to try (I've done benedryl, carmex, vaseline, chapsticks, olive oil, polysporin, antibiotic creams, nipple cream...yes I'll try anything, lip therapy, prescription ointments...)Help!I woke up with swollen lips last Friday morning. They are all crude oil by products. I can use them on lips that are not chapped and skin that is not sensitive. But when I put it on chapped, cracked, swollen or sore lips or skin, oh boy, it makes it way worse! I also have family members with eczema and they can not use those products. Cetaphil lotion (not the cream) is what I use. It does not contain any petroleum products.

The only thing I use anymore is Aquaphor, which is petroleum-based and has mineral oil, so it may not be for everyone. Since it seems that I can no longer even use plain Chapstick, I was happy to find Aquaphor works.

  • Angular Cheilitis. Try putting hydrocortisone cream on your lips (and corners of your mouth) 2-3 times a day for a week. Should take care of it.

  • I've had this exact problem for about a week now (dry, cracked, swollen lips - wake up in the morning and they are dryer and crusty) and thanks to your posts I realize that I have also been using SPLENDA each morning heavily for about a week or so now in my coffee. Thanks for the posts; I'm SO glad I found this thread. I will not be taking coffee OR splenda from this point on!I will be using pure tea tree oil and olive oil 2 - 3 times a day for the next few days and will re-post my results.THANK YOU EVERYONE :)
