my son is 16yrs. normal child with no serious illness. Father just died of MD. 4 months ago, started having Migraines, loss of weight, no appetite, mood swings, sleeps all day. stopped going to school cuz he was "just too tired" skin is pale & dry. Got tested. Showed positive antibody for EBV. Low white cell count, Low neutrophil & abs Neutrophils. High Eosinophil and High reactive lymph. His TSH & total T3 was normal. The PCP said he got exposed to EBV but couldn't tell when and there is nothing really wrong with him. I DONT THINK SO. He has severe allergies to everything from, shellfish, shrimp, dust, pollen, bugs,.......Nose always running. Grass cutting in the yard just makes him sick to his stomach.
Has headache so bad, he vomits sometimes. He is 6'1" and 100lbs. So the docs say there is nothing wrong! You can just look at him and he looks like an AIDS patient. He was tested for HIV also and is negative. The basic blood test all came out within normal range. except for the white cells.
Doc said take him to a Psych, so I did and he has depression. But health wise there is something wrong. Please help. I am worried sick.

  • Im so sorry to hear about your son. As far as EBV goes.. nearly all of us show exposure of that on tests so that doesnt necessary mean anything. My own thought is that he may have chronic fatigue immunity dysfunction syndrome (CFIDS). This is one of the top reason for long term school abteism in school children. It often does make one quite sick. Issues with foods are very common in CFIDS too. http://wwcoco.com/cfids/bernesx.html CFIDS by some has been called non aquired immunity deficiency sydrome (non HIV AIDS), it can affect our immunity in some of us and be very AIDS like in a subgroup of us. It is common for CFIDS patients to end up with coexisting depression.. but this is often situational depression due to trying to deal with a terrible illness which many dont actually believe, having to deal with others telling us it's all in our heads etc etc. Take care as a disbelieving psych doc. could do your son more harm than good.

  • just thought id add someone in for anyone interested interest. There is a drug (it's called Ampligen), which is hopefully going to be the very FIRST approved drug by the FDA for CFIDS.. going throu the approval process right now. It will be known by mid year if it's gained approval or not. This drug is for both AIDS and CFIDS (it is available on special perscription in canada for AIDS patients).. it is a drug which works on the immune system............... To the original poster, if im correct and this is your sons issue, thou it's a serious disease, with him being a child he has the best chance of recovery within the next couple of years. (Children have far better recovery rates with this illness than adults).
