Something is wrong with my eye, but I don't know what it is

The right corner of my right eye was hurting yesterday. It was red, and I didn't know why it happened, but it lasted the whole day. Today, the bottom eyelid of my right eye is swelling up. Does anyone know what this is? How can I treat it?

Does anyone know what this is? How can I treat it?Hi InvisibleMan125,It's pretty likely that what you have is either a stye or a chalazion. Both are localized inflammations of the eyelid(s). Blepharitis is usually more of a generalized inflammation of the eyelid(s).Styes are caused by a bacterial infection. A chalazion develops when an oil gland in the eyelid becomes blocked. Blepharitis is often caused by eyelashes turning into the eye and is usually accompanied by whitish eyelid "crusting" (but not the yellow discharge you'd have with conjunctivitis).Differentiating between these conditions isn't really necessary as treatment is essentially the same for all. Barring complications, none of the three is a serious condition and any of the three should resolve with simple home treatment.Apply warm, wet compresses (warm washcloth) 3-4x/day. Use an OTC solution such as Bausch and Lomb Eye Wash as directed. If eyelid is very crusty, wet thoroughly with Eye Wash and remove crusts gently with moistened gauze (clean cloth if necessary). When the stye/chalazion comes to a head let it open on its own. Don't squeeze it. Keep area clean.A stye will clear up faster (1-2 weeks) than a chalazion (sometime up to a month). If, after a few weeks of home treatment, the inflammation remains unimproved or worsens, contact your doc.Be well!! John
