Hello,
My 5 year old cousin has been suffering from a disorder which no doctor we've been to has been able to identify. He started getting these seizures when he was 4. He was perfectly normal until then, nothing out of the ordinary. After the seizures began, his body just started failing. Over the course of 15 months he's become unable to speak, walk, or even barely move. No one would believe he was a normal kid an year or so ago. Every time he gets a seizure it gets worse little by little. The doctors said brain cells dying or something? Is this Epilepsy? To us it seems as if his mental functions are okay as his behavior is similar to a normal 5 year old's. But he physically incapable. Please help.

  • You may want to look into Lyme disease. Testing in North America is very poor but IGENX labs out of California is excellent. Lyme affects hundreds of thousands of people throughout Canada and US with many remaining sick without proper diagnosis. The medical community is NOT equipped or prepared to acknowledge Lyme so you need to find a Lyme-literate doctor who will guide you.

  • With the kind of symptoms that you mentioned, it surely looks like epilepsy. More than two seizures point towards epilepsy. Get him diagnosed at a good medical center. Seizure diagnosis includes tests like blood tests, MRI, CAT scan, or spinal tap. Treatment could depend on child’s age, type of seizure, tolerance for medication, etc. Medications and a ketogenic diet are usually suggested for seizure control.
