Ok.....stream of information incoming.

I am a 29-year-old female. I have suffered from chronic abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea for over 10 years. I was diagnosed with IBS, but there are a few odd things that go along with it that make it seem like it doesn't quite fit.

I almost always have pain along the entire left side of my abdomen. You would see me rubbing my side off and on throughout the day to try to relieve the pain. It doesn't work.

It doesn't seem to matter what I eat. Any and everything can make me sick. Just about anything I eat makes me nauseous. I can go for weeks without having bowel problems, but when they kick in, they hit with a vengeance. I almost always go to the bathroom at least 3 - 5 times a day, even if it's not diarrhea. I tend to pass lots of mucus as well, and sometimes blood.

I have had a endoscopy (hiatal hernia, on Aciphex for that), 2 colonoscopies (one polyp and a few small internal hemrrhoids), a small bowel study (normal), etc. Nothing definite has ever turned up.

I have had 2 rounds of intense pain on my upper right side, under my ribcage, both of which landed me in the ER. I had vomiting, diarrhea, and a fever with one episode, and the other was just diarrhea and fever. They suspected my gallbladder, but, again, it checked out normal. I was given painkillers and fluids and discharged, and it eventually went away. My heart rate was also VERY high during these episodes - the last one my resting rate was 135 bpm.

Other odd things that may or may not be related to this : I am ALWAYS tired, and I never seem to feel 'well'. I couldn't tell you the last time I actually felt good. My skin hurts to the touch a lot, and gets worse when I am having an attack or am otherwise ill. I have episodes where I get so tired I just have to sit down and wait for it to pass. I run low-grade fevers quite a bit, often in conjunction with attacks.

I guess what I'm asking is if you have any ideas. Colitis, Crohn's, etc. have all been ruled out. I have a hard time accepting an IBS diagnoses, especially because I am in so much pain so often, and it's hard to believe there is nothing that can be done about the level of pain.

I appreciate you taking the time to read this, and hope you may have some insight for me.

  • You said that nothing that you eat makes any difference in your symptoms, but have you tried a gluten free diet??All of your symptoms are CLASSIC gluten sensitivity. But don't bother getting tested- or if you've already been tested for celiac disease and its come back negative then you need to listen carefully because Celiac disease tests come back negative FREQUENTLY.The only way to REALLY tell if you have gluten sensitivity is to try a gluten free diet for 60 to 90 days and see if that helps your symptoms. I'm betting that it will!!Kerri Knox, RNFunctional Medicine Practitioner
