Hi, My son has been sick for 3 1/2 weeks now and the doctors cant seem to figure out whats wrong with him. He has had a high temp of around 104.0 the whole time hes been sick. He first started out with a sore neck and lower back. A headache, and threw up a few times. Now he says his neck and back dont hurt anymore but the back of his leg does. His hamstring. He still has the temp and gets a headache often. The doctors have tested his white blood count... fine, tested for mono.... didnt have it, did a chest x-ray... fine there too. They thought he had the flu and put him on Tamaflu, that didn't help either. Now they started him on a Z-pack, I guess their cure all when they cant find out what is actualy wrong. He has lost 35 lbs since hes been sick. He's pale and has dark circles under his eyes. He sleeps a lot and gets tired easy. He won't eat much but drinks fluids fine. What im wondering is, if hes had a temp for this long, and they don't know whats wrong with him, why wont they put him in the hospital or run more tests or something? Hes 16 by the way. I don't know what questions to ask the doctor or what to do next. Any help or advice would be great.

  • Have him tested for the Epstein Barr virus - this sounds very much like mononucleosis

  • Has your child had a spinal tap done for menengitis? The headache and neck pain accompanied by that fever that long. If not have him hospitalized and demand they figure it out. At least at the hospital they could feed him intravenously and keep him hydrated, to help with the weight loss. Good luck!

If he does not drink enough water his stomach valves won't open and close properly and he will throw up.Muscle cramps are also signs of dehydration. Caffeine and aspartame are bad for people in this condition. He may have a bug as well- it might not be a virus. Research on food alternatives to improve immunity as well as supplements of vitamins and minerals to give him support while the doctors run tests. Probiotics are alwasys a good thing to start.Take Care.

  • Took him to the doctor yet again yesterday. They took more blood, checked to see if there was any infection in it. It came back fine. They found him a little low on iron. He has lost 4 more pounds since the last time I posted. The doctor sent him home to drink more fluids, take vitamins and told him to eat more. She said she wants to do a follow up on him in a month....??? I don't understand why they wont test him more. He has taken all the Z-Pack and still no improvment. Last night he had a low temp (101.2) and I gave him something for it, 2 hours later he woke me up and was soaking wet and freezing cold. His bed, pillow, and blanket were also wet. Am I missing something, or is she right to brush it off?
