Hello to all. Around Memorial Day my 8 yr. old became very ill. He was having a fever of 104 with no other apparent symptoms. I took him to the ER and the Dr. said that it was probably just a virus. It took him almost 3 weeks to get over it. We brought him to the Dr. every few days because we were getting worried about the fever, and the Dr just kept shoving antibiotics down his throat. A rapid strep in the office came back positive, but a culture sent to the lab came back negative for strep, but the Dr still insisted on giving him antibiotics.

About a week and a half ago, it started up again. Same thing. High fevers that are hard to break. After being frustrated with our old Dr's approach of just giving antibiotics, we switched to a new Dr. The fevers lasted a bit over a week this time. Finally I got this Dr to order some lab work, and she tested him for Mono and also a CBC. We finally got the results, and everything looks normal, so she is chalking it up as a virus.

Now today, he is starting to get that look in his eyes when he is about to get sick. It's the same look that happened the first time he got sick, as well as the second. I understand that his blood looks good, but what can cause him to get sick and then relapse after feeling well?

I just am so confused about this because normally my Son is one of those children who hardly EVER get sick, and if he does it usually only lasts a day or two. So for him to be so sick the first time, and to have it happen again a few weeks ago is a bit usual.

Can someone help me figure out what could be causing this? I am so frustrated with the standard "it's just a virus" that I keep getting from the Dr!

  • No ticks in our area, but we do live in a region where West Nile is present currently. We also had him tested for something called Valley Fever, but he came up negative for that. I will check with his Dr about West Nile, so thank you for the suggestion! I had not previously thought of that!
