I noticed my lymph nodes on my occipital bone on my head were swollen about a month ago. I went to the Dr. and he said it was probably nothing, telling me if they don't go away in a few weeks to come back. I went back last week, as they had not gone away, and I now have a dull headache, with pain behind my eyes. The Dr. checked me over and did bloodwork, thinking I either had mono, or wanted to check my white blood cell count. My bloodwork came back normal. He put me on an antibiotic, and told me to return in three weeks. This morning, I woke up with severe joint pain in my wrists (I am having difficulty typing this), as well as in my knees and ankles. I really am just frustrated, as I feel I am getting worse, and am worried I may have some sort of lymphoma. Could anyone offer any similar experience or have any idea what might be wrong? If the joint pain continues, I am going to make a Dr. Appt. for Monday first things. Thanks.

Aggrivated that your Doctor put you on antibiotics without knowing what was really going on. These actions are why we have things like MRSA- because of the over-medicating of antibiotics people do not need! I would not get ahead of myself with the lymphoma thing.. your symptoms could be any number of things. Are there any autoimmune diseases in your family? Have you been bit by any insects? Do you have any rashes? When did it start exactly and what was going on at that time? Do you know what kind of bloodwork he did precisely? What is your family history? Are you under alot of stress. Has anything happened in your life that is very different? These are things that I would think about. You might want to set up another appt with this Doctor. If he can not give you an answer than might want to ask him to transfer you to a Neurologist for the headaches or Rheumatologist or Orthopedic Doc for the pain. There has got to be a reason.

  • Thanks for your reply. I am under a lot of stress- in graduate school, working an internship and a part-time job, and trying to be a good wife :) I have found now that my headache has gone away, which I think is a good sign. However, the joint pain is unbearable today- i called my dr. yesterday, and they think it may be a side effect of the anti-biotic I am on (Doxycycline). They told me to stop taking, so today is the first day I am not on it. I am hoping this pain will go away. It is just frustrating to have such unbearable pain (today it is in my collar bone area as well). I can hardly move around without wanting to cry. The lymph nodes are still swollen. I did have a tick on my head about a month or so ago; however, it did not bite me (as far as I know). I've also looked for the bullseye rash on my head (common in lyme disease) but cannot find one. I have no family history of anything like this; just heart disease. I am only 25 years old, exercise regularly, eat very well, etc. I'm not sure what kind of blood work they did- it only took 10 minutes to get the results back, so I can't imagine it was that detailed. You said you had some of the same symptoms- I hope that you find some answers soon, also. What have your doctors said about you? Thanks.

  • I agree with Deedee. You have obviously had an infection och your body has developed an autoimmune reaction. They call this type of arthritis reactive arthritis. It should get better with time, but it can take a while. Good luck with everything!!

  • Hey Guys!Thought I would share my story, since it resembles yours so much. I am a 27 year old Danish man. For a year, I experienced shortness of breath, severe headaches, fatique and blurry vision. Later my stomach started giving me a hard time, and I started having severe cramps and reflux after having eaten. Suddenly, lumps appeared in the back of my head. I was sent to a specialist, who told me that they were swollen lymph nodes responding to a previous or current infection in my body. That made perfect sense, as I was feeling generally sick and fatigued. Shortly after, I woke up with a sore foot. My right foot seemed irritated and hurt a bit, but since I am a steady runner, and I am used to foot problems, I thought nothing of it. As the days progressed, my foot became swollen and hurt like h... The pain was mindblowing. The large tendon on my foot became inflammed and so did one of my toes (sausage toe). Soon after, my wrist, knee and jaw were also affected by inflammation and started to swell severely. I was in a state of pain, I had never experienced before, and I started taking Ibuprofen in large numbers. My reumatologist is still uncertain what kind of arthritis, I am suffering from. But in my mind, I have few doubts that an long term infection triggered an arthritis response in my body (most likely reactive arthritis). After almost 3 months, I am slowly recovering thanks to acupuncture and a changed diet, including lots of Omega 3, herbs, etc. The inflammation in my wrist and jaw has almost disappeared, and my knee is looking better every day. My foot remains my biggest problem, as the inflammation can't seem to let go. I still experience an aching feeling in my fingers, the swollen lymph nodes are still there, and I have problems walking. Had I known what I know now, I would have responded much quicker to the uncomfortable feeling in my body and the lymph nodes in the back of my head. Obviously, they were a warning of what was to come. So respect your body's signals and respond to them before it reacts through painfull arthritis. Reactive Arthritis is no joke so do everything you can to avoid it. And if you get it, educate yourself, change your diet and fight it with all you got, before its too late. According to what I have read, arthritis responds to treatment in the first months following the onset of the decease. Everyday reflux, stomach pain, severe headaches, blurry vision and swollen lymph nodes in the back of your head should be clear warning signals. Arthritis (and particual Reactive Arthritis) does not come from nothing, its there for a reason. Good luck to you all!

  • My sister has the same thing you do once in awhile, but it's always caused by a flu. It goes away after a month or two, but it makes her miserable the entire time. See if you can get some penicillin or something, that might help.

Did you know that one in six US adults has high cholesterol?

  • I have had a lot of the same symptoms, headache, swelling on my head, which I thought was hives, but I was just told it was swollen lymph nodes. I was exposed to micron sized chemicals through a shipping bag when this all started almost 4 months ago. I'm on my fourth round of steroids and getting very frustrated that I can't find anyone interested in helping me with healing and not just covering up the symptoms. No one can tell me what's causing this. I've had persistent hives popping up on different parts of my body, as well as wrist, hand, finger and foot swelling and the swelling on my head. I'm on 4 different stomach meds to deal with the reflux and burning in my esophagus as well as drugs for allergies and itching. Nothing is working and I am really frustrated and exhausted. I can easily sleep 12 hours at night and then take a 3 or 4 hour nap within a couple of hours of getting up in the morning. I've gotten to the point I don't know which type of doctor to go to who can help with all these symptoms which I know are all related. I don't know if they don't know how to handle chemical exposure or at this point wonder if any of them really care.

  • I have a lot of the same symptoms. started when i was 18, now 25. Last month i found out i had a malignant tumor in my neck. It's inoperable, told to deal with the pain meds and live as long as i will. As they do not except it to spread, to fast. So get it checked out as soon as possible. U do not want to wait till they can't or won't do anything. best of luck , pray for everyone!

  • I know this was posted long ago but I had this exact same series of events happen to me recently....I'm going to follow up with my doctor soon. Although the whole thing kicked off with a full night of fever before the eye pain or swollen lymph nodes. Did you find out what it was?
