My wife has been experiencing severe joint pain mainly through the night. It has been going on for about 3- weeks. The past couple of days it has become very bad. She can hardly walk. Two days ago her ankles began to swell.

She has been checked for Rheumatory Arthritis, lupus, and gout. Everything has came back negative. She has had blood work done to check for viruses. She had an EKG done yesterday to make sure her heart was fine. They have found nothing. The doctor has given her a prescription for an anti-inflamatory. The swelling in the ankles have went down.

The doctor has told her to wait a couple of days and see if she is feeling better after taking the medicine. At this point she can hardly walk and is in sever pain.

Any ideas? Are the doctors missing anything?

Thanks.

  • Look at human Parvo Virus. This is a possibility after reading up on Human Parvo Virus. The only problem is I don't recall any redness on the cheeks. Would this have been caught in her regular blood work, or does it require a special test?

  • Hi - I am not sure how the testing went...but i wanted to let you know i went to the ER last night because i got to feeling so bad...it wasn't anything in particular really i just felt bad, and had the severe swelling and like i think i said it is now all the way down to my toes, when you press on the swelling it looks like a water balloon's movement....anyway the er doc said there was nothing he could do and i need to wait and see my reg doc monday, well i asked him to go ahead and run blood tests, about half the tests either came back hi or low, kidneys were fine, but apparently i didn't have enough protein and was drinking TOO much water, didn't know you could do that.....its called water intoxication, and you can literally drown yourself, he did say that i also look like a have a virus, but no clue what, but the lab results support a virus...said my reg doc wil have to look into it, so i started eating a clif bar here and there, and drinking gatorade (thank God they have new flavors) lol....anyway if this helps at all or if any of this fits your wife have her checked out, the water intox can produce seizures if your sodium level gets to low.......hope it helps in some way:)

  • Add cold chills to the list... any ideas? We are really getting frustrated.

  • with the cold chills is there a fever or is it that she feels cold? I have times that i put like 4 blankets on top of me and shivering, although my skin is hot to the touch , i havent had a fever over 99.5.....the docs say i have a virus, i poked and prodded today of what kind of virus, he said there are thousands....we have to watch the symptoms and treat them while finding out what is going on, they said they may have to consult with my rheumo doc (she is 80 miles N of me) i live in a lil town with very limited medicine.....the er docs are awful but i am lucky there are a couple really thorough docs here at the university.....anyway, has your wife had an ultrasound, i am in a screen where i cant look back at the orig post....does she have any respiratory probs? ill let you go on the questions i have listed and i'll go back and look at the orig thread and re-read and if i think of anything else i will let you know...can you take a pic of the swelling...if you want to take a pic, ill send you one of mine also....an fyi, i document everything with pics.....so you can take them with you if you need to chg docs at some point and doc the symptoms and all....just an idea, i always take pics with me when i go see my rheumo....anyway i hope to hear from you soon....Jen

  • I would re-check the blood....demand it if you have to....cause it can change quickly like mine did in 36 hrs....i know she prob doesnt have lupus, but i always has neg ANA and it took a rheumo that was very curious and dedicated to my case, umpteen tubes of blood later she finally found a rheumo factor that was outside of the normal range and diagnosed the lupus at that time, if she has rheumo, or any other immuno disease, just hypothetically i am speaking.....you may need to find a doc that is willing to try any test, and doesnt let their pride in the way and makes sure your wife's case is #1, sudden onset like this needs to be figured out as i know that is an obvious statement as i am sure she is feeling it......what meds do they have her on, forgot if i said i started taking celebrex last fri and was taken it off today as they believe i may be allergic or something since i have swole significantly more since then....anyway let me know how she is doing please. Jen:)

  • She has been running a low grade fever off and on. 99.5-100.6 range. She is going back to the doctor today. She tried to get an appointment with a Rheumo, but they can not see her until May. Others have also told me that the blood does not always tell the story. I found out last night that she has a sister (half sister) that was diagnosed with Rheumo and Lupus. I don't know if this makes any difference. I will let you know after her visit today what the doc's are saying. thanks for your input. Joe

She has had no xrays or ultra sound. I hope they do this today. She has started documnenting the symptoms. Everything sure does point to a Rheumo problem. It is just strange how it come on so fast. She started expereincing pain about 3- weeks ago. We did not pay much attention to it because she has had neck problems for around 6 months now. She was seeing a physical thearapist. Thanks again for your input.

  • Well i hope they run a whole battery of tests....i agree with the blood not telling everything as i mentioned before i think it took special test aftr all the initial one to find the lupus. Like i said i never i had a positive ANA which is usually the inicator you know....genetics are important it think, glad you got that info...let me know hoe the doc goes please....jen

  • Well, it has been 5 months now... still no exact diagnosis. Here is what we know now after seeing a Rheumo.. 1. ANA is positive2. She has gout in her right ankle3. She is having problems in the left eye, inflamation behind the eye and vision problems 4. Doc is pretty sure it is not RA5. He has given her meds for Lupus, even though he is not sure if it is Lupus.6. In a nutshell, she has a positive ANA a high SED rate and a negative RF. I would love to know what any of you think.

  • She had a full body scan and everything looked normal. I assume you could see a clot with a full body scan.

  • I'm not sure, but I think they need to inject you with something to look at your veins..they use a contrast dye....don't you have a copy of your lab work and the results of all the tests run???
