I have been getting severe abdominal pains for about 4 months now. I have altered my diet, eaten only rice/light food, avoided dairy, and avoided MSG.

I have been taking Prilosic for about 3 weeks now...
I am 18, female.

Also:
Bowel movements not often (twice a week)
Diarrhea when I go (not much comes out)
Blood on toilet paper
Strong urge to throw up, but I don't
Feels like food bashes down my system and hits off everything
Pain is in stomach and down

What's going on? :( Had an upper GI done, showed nothing. Doctor says nothing is wrong, mom believes doctor, and neither will help me get further testing. Help. :( Pains are getting consistently worse.

  • And I should have also mentioned, I had a CBC done, all it showed was that my WBC's were high, and my iron was low. And I am very tired. I rarely leave the house besides for school.

  • You need to get a complete stool test done to check for parasites, e coli, candida and bacteria to rule out these infections. You need to get tested for H. Pylori as this could also cause your symptoms. Find another doc if this one won't do these tests! Also, how is your menstrual cycle? Any pain? Do you have bad PMS? heavy periods? Have you had constipation like this your whole life? How is your stress level? Stress can play a HUGE part with your digestion I am an acupuncturist and strongly recommend you try acupuncture and Chinese herbs to help regulate your condition. This can be very helpful and helps balance the body. You need to get your digestion regulated and have regular daily bowel movements. To find one near you please go to www.acufinder.com and type in your zip code. At the very least you need to be on a good probiotic, and try taking digestive enzymes during meals and eat 3-4 small meals a day.Best of luck to you.Doctor of Oriental Medicine

  • I get some cramps with my period, but not much. I am on birth control, and it regulates everything very well. I never had constipation before, and I think my stress level in minimal. It's not really the doctor, it's more my mother, she doesn't want me to get testing done. I thought it was something related to sushi because I used to eat it quite often, but she insists it will "go away on it's own". :( Thank you for your reply though, it means a lot to me. Thanks very much. I shall go on a Chinese herb hunt. :)

  • Sorry you have a mother that doesn't believe you!! You really need to address this further though, regardless of what she OR A MEDICAL DOCTOR FEELS. You mentioned you used to eat alot of sushi?? Parasites are very likely in the picture. Sushi eaters are quite prone to parasitic infections. I worked for a healthcare company a long time ago and people called in to us and spoke to our staff practitioners, some people passed up to 5 ft. worms!!! It was unbelievable but true!!! You may need a parasite cleanse and some herbs and a special diet. Find a good acupuncturist that can check you out (they can look at your tongue and pulse and tell alot about your internal organs) and advise you to a reputable parasite cleanse if needed. This may explain why your WBCs are high but your iron is low. They love to eat blood!! Good luck and don't delay getting real help!! There are people out there that have integrity and will believe you and help you;)

  • Dear 'Severe abdominal pain & Others'~I am a 36,(will be 37 tomorrow),year old mommy of 3. I have begun to have severe abdominal pains myself recently,(since October of 2006).I was usually VERY regular- 2-3 bowel movements a day, very solid. I recently became under the influence of some very heavy stress...(Doctor's seem to want to label my problems in this region).I went from being very regular to now hardly at all, and it is very similar to what you described...(pasty, irregular, & also, way smelly). I too am very regular with my periods; I always have been, even after pregnancies, and car wrecks, and mega-stress. I do not use birth control to regulate my body, (tried this when I was 16, and it just screwed me up). I never have had menstrual cramps, nor did my contractions ever hurt much at all. So I tend to believe it's nothing to do with this. However, I have been to the ER in a span of 10 days (on the 22nd, and on the 1st). I DO NOT celebrate holidays, (I think they are a superficial waste of time/ money/ etc., & not based on giving Glory to Our Creator); so I do not suffer from 'holiday stress'. Within this 10 day span, I have also gone to the urgent care clinic twice, my OB/ GYN, my Chiropractor, and had a CAT (or CT) scan. Lots of blood was drawn, and I also dropped off a stool sample. Here's the deal: My bloodwork shows nothing abnormal, with the exception of high white blood cell count, (like I believe you stated your tests showed), and a lot of potassium in my blood. This was discovered at the urgent care clinic. Nothing was discovered in my stool samples. (I will let you know the exact tests I had, once I get them all from my Chiropractor- whom I've asked the doctor's to send my records to since I've known him for about 15 years). The CT scan showed that I have cysts on my ovaries, and my liver, AND that I had diverticuli in my large intestine. Now, I have looked up all of those things on the internet, (Thank God for the Internet); and discovered that these things can be fairly common, with little or no symptoms; to many symptoms, and something VERY wrong. (SO basically, not a lot of help for me on this level). The ER was even less helpful, as they said I was having panic attacks, (uh, YEAH DUH, when it feels like my intestines are going to drop on the floor, and I am having uncontrollable seizures, difficulty breathing, extreme dehydration-even though all I pretty much drink is water, dizziness, insomnia, severe abdominal pain, can't control my temp, nausea for no apparent reason, sever headaches, and I can't have a normal bowel movement- yeah, I am going to freak-out a bit). SO even though my vitals are fine, and I am not running a fever or vomiting, they essentially did nothing to figure out what was wrong with me. They took a urine sample the second time I was there, and said I had a urinary tract infection. I was tested the next day at the urgent care clinic, and suprise, no UTI. My OB/ GYN visit was good. (Waiting for results on the pap for cervical cancer), but on other-wise healthy uterus/ breasts. My Chiropracter was the best help of all. He felt that, due to not having regular bowel movements, that my body was straining to still perform this process, thereby creating stress upon my kidneys. (An organ you definately do not want to fail). He gave me a bottle of Standard Process's (you can look this company up on the internet) Albaplex, to assist with kidney function. I have taken many of Standard Process's products, all with benefits, and no side effects. It is simply all natural products. I should also mention that my Chiropractor is a natural-path/ nutritionist, and he NEVER performs manipulative care upon me. He uses pressure points of the nerves to do adjustments. ( I imagine similar to an acupuncturist, without the pins). Since my adjustment, on the 4th, I have had 3 bowel movements. Still not solid, but better. Every other symptom, except the pain in the left-side lower region, has lessened considerably- (sorry, it's late, and my spelling is getting worse). I should also mention that I have not been sexually active for about 8 years; I do not drink coffee- never have- or pop- rarely ever had; I don't take over the counter drugs- haven't wanted or needed to for years. I am rarely even ever sick with the common cold, and I never get a flu shot, cuz I never get sick like that. I have maintained my same weight for over 20 years- not by being obsessive or extreme in any way. Just naturally good metabolism. ( I also had my thyroid tested- not a problem there). I too have had anemia many times throughout my life, beginning in my childhood. Never was this a source of abdominal/ intestinal pain. I know how to recognize when my body is 'tired' from a lack of iron. This is not the case for me now.I have smoked a lot of pot in my day- but not cigarettes. I have taken a few other drugs, ( ie- morphine after my c-section, vicodin, acid 5 times, cocaine 5 times, and a little bit of 'crank')-BUT all YEARS AGO. I also rarely drink alcohol...I truly don't like ANYTHING SYNTHETIC or MIND ALTERING. I eat VERY well- whole foods, organic, lots of salads. I have a weakness for cake, cookies, brownies, ice cream, pies, and sugar cereals. NOW- HOW TO ASSIST YOU! : ^ )You mentioned having an Upper GI test, what about a lower one? A colonoscopy? ( I am going to go to a gastronologist in February, provided I don't have further complications between now and then). Also, are you straining to go to the bathroom, (number one or two?) Have you lost the ability to recognize when a stool should be there, or it feels like, gee you have to go, and then can't? Have you had any changes in your life recently- good or bad- with regards to: Clothing/ bedding/ bed/ furnature/ carpeting/ other fabrics?Do you have pets? Are they vaccinated and healthy? What kind of pets? You could have picked up something from an animal if you are around them in your job or school or just any pet you may have had contact with recently.Have you changed your diet, or ingested anything 'unusual' to you recently? (You mentioned Sushi- did you get sick from this and vomit?) Have you experienced ANY other symptoms? Nausea/ vomiting/ fever/ or any of the ones I mentioned experiencing?Any recent exposure to toxins, different cleaning chemicals, sick people?Have you changed homes/ schools/ work environments? Changed your hair color/ make-up/ nail polish or used more frequently or haven't changed these things out in a while? ( I rarely use make-up at all, and do not color my hair). Is your skin/ hair/ teeth/ gums etc normal? Any abnormal bleeding from anything? Any recent injuries? (Or really bad old ones?)Did you recently get anything peirced? Bitten or scratched? Maybe you contracted an infection somewhere? Are you sexually active, ( you mentioned birth control)?Have you had a PAP Smear recently? Are you pregnant?Do you change litter boxes, or clean up after baby poo poo?Do you use any drugs or alcohol? (Like I said, I have done so in the past, but not now- even when offered to me by doctors, as I WANT to feel my pain so I can tell that something is wrong with me, and I can 'zone-in' on where that is, and not just mask it). Lastly, are you happy with your life? It sounds as if your mom, who's medical insurance it is that you must be on (?)- doesn't want you to discover what is wrong with you. I would never ignore what my daughter or sons tell me about themselves and their health conditions. If you cannnot get her to understand, PLEASE find someone whom you can confide in, and ask them. If you feel your options in that area are limited, then go to your local Kingdom Hall- ( I am not a Jehovah's Witness)- but these wonderful and truly loving people have not only guided me out of a world of dispair, but have been there at the right time with the right assistance EVERY TIME I HAVE NEEDED THEM. I am willing to bet my life that someone there will be able to guide you to where you need to go for what ails you.Other than that, please keep trying to get better by : Abstaining from unhealthy practices- unprotected sex, alcohol and any other drugs, self abuse, or allowing others to abuse you- mentally, physically, or emotionally...you do not want to get to my age, and wish that you hadn't put a stop to something before it was too late to do anything about it. Try to get better by : eating WHOLE foods- lots of raw veggies, fruits, nuts- (I don't know if you are allergic to anything, but this has helped me, as I now stay away from the sweets- darn it ; ^ ) AND please, ponder the questions I have asked you to see if you can narrow this down. So many things can go wrong with the body, and, one thing often leads to another. Also, things sometimes take a while to make their presence known. We often ignore many warning signs. Before I lost my regularity, I was already having lower left pain. I researched it the best I could on the internet, ( as I always try to educate myself, and recognize early signs); but without other symptoms- at that time- I was at a loss. Lastly, if you have a high white blood cell count, here is my guess about you as well as myself- we are fighting some sort of infection, and it is disabling us from ridding ourselves regularly and efficiently from body toxins. This is why it is crucial to eat the cleanest and wholest foods we can get. Also, eat smaller meals more frequently, as this will put less strain on the body. Drink LOTS of good clean water. Don't expose yourself to further toxins of anysort- from clothing, to make-up, to drugs, to synthetic foods. If toxins build up, and it's already a strain to get rid of them, then we will just do further damage to our system if we ingest more toxins. Maintain good oral hygeine. And please, after you read this long-winded post, let me know how you are, and any other changes you are going through. My prayers are with you young one!

  • My doctor will not give me a referral for a colonoscopy, since nothing showed up on the upper GI series. My mother won't take me to see one without a referral. It's hard to go to the bathroom, but when I go, it's diarrhea or soft. I feel like I need to go, but I can't sometimes. No changes in lifestyle at all.I have a Jack Russell Terrier, he is vaccinated and a good dog.I haven't eaten sushi since I started to get the pains. Maybe I had it 5 months ago? I had cooked sushi on Christmas, but that was it. I did once throw up after eating sushi, which was the last time I ate it. I'm not positive this was the sushi, or just regular food poisoning.I get horrible nausea, occassional dizziness, severe heartburn that hasn't gone away at all with Prilosic or Tums. I came down with a fever of about 102 degrees last night, didn't go to school today. No exposure to anything I know of, although I could've picked something up at school. Nothing that I know of.No environmental changes.I haven't dyed my hair in ages, and I rarely use makeup. My ankle was swollen for a day when I woke up. Not sure why. I get dime-sized rashes (I think?) on random parts of my body. They don't itch, they're just rough and red. I bruise very easily now, and I never bruised before.I got my ear pierced in a sterile environment, and it doesn't hurt at all. This was about 3 weeks ago (pains started 4 months ago).I'm sexually active, but with only one person, and I know he is only sexually active with me, and was never active with anyone else.No pap smear ever. I know I am not pregnant.I don't do anything related to bowel movements of anything/anyone else.I never did any drugs, and I don't drink at all.I'm not happy with my life currently, but mostly because of the pains. My boyfriend is being a ***k lately, but he says that's because I never talk anymore. We're in a long-distance relationship. But can you blame me for not talking? Every time I open my mouth I feel like I'm going to get sick to my stomach.I just got off the phone with my doctor, she wants me to go see my gynecologist. I don't understand why, I'm not having any problems with my period. :(My best friend has Crohn's. Is this a possibility for me, or something similar?

  • Well, anything is possible....If you are sexually active, (and especially unprotected sex), you could have contracted any number of STD's...(even if your partner hasn't had sex with anyone else but you in a while). Seeing a gynocologist is a VERY good idea, as it will at least give you a bearing on any other possible problems with you, that can relate to your not being able to go to the bathroom. The rashes and bruising scare me, and I am having a difficult time with not judging your mother too harshly...(will she allow you to go to the gynocologist?) Also, there are many 'free clinics'- who will see you privately, and on a sliding scale fee if you cannot afford much. (I had to do this when I was 16, and my mother would not allow me to see anyone but my pediatrician). I am glad you don't use drugs and alcohol! : ^ ) Stay strong in that! Are you keeping a journal of your situation? It's a good idea for you, and any doctor's you may see, etc. Sometimes it's even helpful for your own mental health, so you can establish a pattern, have something to reflect upon, and show others how serious you are about your health. In my opinion, your situation has gone on way too long. I mean, it only took me a couple of months of not being regular before I started to go downhill pretty fast. Stress can be a factor here...it sounds as if you do not have anyone truly helpful to turn to. (A young boyfriend is not a man, and therefore cannot behave as such...and many 'men' aren't very well-adjusted, and many 'men' are truly very selfish and insensitive). My 'high-school sweetheart' (whom I was with from age 16-20), turned out to be 'a player'- what's at the root of that? Selfishness, and a lack of concern for others, (insensitivity). Now, I am not saying that that is YOUR boyfriend...uh, but honey, I wouldn't put it past him. Also I have noticed over the years that selfish 'men' tend to 'target' women who don't have any strong, healthy ties with their family or others. I truly don't know what this does for them, (and I don't care to know); but it seems like an element of control. My previous boyfriend 'wanted' me all to himself...he even acted like 'a ***k' when I 'withdrew' or wouldn't 'confide' in him all the time....this is an act of a desparate person, who cannot stand to be left out for fear that you have found help elsewhere than them. I know from hard experience, oh so many things...PLEASE just focus on YOU! You cannot live without YOU. I know that just sounds like simple logic, but it's more involved than that when you are talking about human needs, (you need someone to truly care about you, and to be supportive, NOT someone who adds their own problems to 'the pot'); thereby ignoring, passing over, or dismissing your true problems. YOU are your greatest advocate. DON"T GIVE UP! And if you cannot find sanity, love, or assistance from those currently in your life, seek out others. Many times, there are many people who are around us who are willing to help, but cannot because we do not risk opening up, and reaching out to tell them. You have tried your mother, you have tried your boyfriend...being 'only human' and fallible in their own ways, they can only offer/ give so much support. It sounds very limited. I am glad you reached out here, and that I just happened to come across your post. I hope I have been able to give you some help...however limited MY help may be/ have been. SO, I urge you to go ahead to the GYN...and perhaps the county/ local free clinic. I also urge you to keep a journal of your situation for reference. Oh, yeah, also, your Jack Russell may not be as healthy as you think, and you CAN contract diseases from pets...if he is not fully vaccinated, or has fleas, you could have gotten a tape worm, or Lymes disease- (rashes are a symptom of that). Please mention that at your next doctor's visit. (Are you in an area where there are ticks?)Lastly, other than the 'healthy lifestyle' things I mentioned, please do seek out a local Kingdom Hall...while it's not a 'direct' method in solving your PHYSICAL problems, I know you will find love and support there- since the Bible tells us that a certain 'mark' exists that tells us we have found God's true people...and that 'mark' is love. I truly hope you get the assistance you need. You shouldn't have such problems at such a young age!

  • I don't think it's my boyfriend, I'm 100% positive he's never been with another girl sexually, and I trust him 100%. As for my dog, he doesn't really do much lol. And I doubt it's a tick, but it could be. Although he goes to the vet quite often. My mother is okay with me seeing the gyno, because I want to switch birth control. I really trust my boyfriend though, he's never done anything to show he doesn't care about me, and he's always there for me. He's never shown any signs of jealously or cheating and has pretty much been the biggest support through this. I might mention an STD to him though, I suppose anything is possible. Thank you again for your post. :)

  • Thank you for the response...If you are that sure about your boyfriend, then I would not offend him by mentioning any STD's, at least not until you go to the GYN. He may be a wonderful person, and this would just hurt his feelings...or worse, make him think YOU were the untrustworthy one.I sure hope you find out what's wrong with you...have you had a stool sample done for any bacterial infections? Maybe that sushi was a 'raw deal' - lol. Anyway, I wish you great health and many blessings...you will be in my prayers!

  • Thanks, you're a great person. :) I've been getting more pains along with the stomach pains, and I'm nearly positive that it's my kidneys. Grr. Oh well though, it should be better soon enough. :)

  • Thanks, you're a great person. :) I've been getting more pains along with the stomach pains, and I'm nearly positive that it's my kidneys. Grr. Oh well though, it should be better soon enough. :)Well thank you! I try to be kind, decent, and helpful...When is our GYN visit? If you suspect your kidneys, then you don't want to wait too long, as this is a system which, if failed, can cause life-long problems, or death. ( I am not trying to scare you). I have a 15 year old kitty, who was severely constipated, (in the x-ray you could see his stool backed up all the way to his small intestine). If his poo poo had gone into the small intestine, he would have had kidney failure, (AKA renal failure). The vet gave him an enema, and we had to alter his diet, and monitor him closely to make sure he was going to the bathroom without straining. This was just 2 days before I went to the ER in December. He is back to normal now...(how many lives does he have...? I just don't know!)So I would just say keep eating lots of healthy raw veggies, fruits, and drink lots of water... smaller, but frequent portions are better, so you will not have so much to process at once. I personally feel much better after my adjustment last week- and the Albaplex ( by Standard Process Inc)- and I have continued with the diet I mentioned above- ( although I've added red meat to it now, as I love steak, etc.). So hopefully, you will get better too. Ah, at 18 I was managing apartments, and had full health... I cannot imagine going through something like this at your age. So I wish you the best of everything- truly!(Don't forget to keep me posted)

  • It's not as bad as it sounds... Many worse things can happen to you when you're 18. :)As for my kidneys, the pains are on both my sides in the same places, but a little bit higher than where my stomach pains were. Could the constipation I've been getting cause that?My gyn visit is the 25th, but my doctor said I should get an ultrasound before that to check my ovaries. o.O Could my ovaries seriously be causing the problems I've been getting? I've been pretty set on something in my digestive tract, just because I get the pains when I get/after I eat. Silly doctor.
