Hi, I dont know if anyone can help, or give an opinion on my situation, but if anyone who is reading (im hoping) is medically trained maybe you can!

Im a 24 year old female and just before xmas I was rushed into hospital with septacimia :-( They did various test and narrowed down the source of the infection as somewhere in my abdomen as the bugs in my blood were actually traced back from the bowel. I had a CT scan which showed that my bowel was fine, Infact everything was clear and nothing was showing up as to be a problem. The only thing was, They found a simple 2cm kidney cyst on my right kidney that they said was definatly not linked to the septacimia. Infact they said I had possibly had this cyst for years without me actually realising, because they dont have any symptoms and dont cause any problems.

Anyway I was discharged from hospital after a week not knowing how I got ill, which was really scary for me as I dont want the hospital to have overlooked a possible problem that may come back as the death rate is over 50% for what I had :-(

I have had follow up scans and appointments from the hospital since and recently the cyst has shown on an MRI to have grown to 4cm and is full of 'debris' and suddenly the hospital consultants have decided that It was after all the kidney cyst that caused me to have to septacimia! This concerns me as I was told simple kidney cysts dont cause problems? And i am now scared the same thing will happen again, I am now getting pain in the kidney area...Is this normal?

Also I feel so weak and have days were I feel sick and have had no appitite since all this happened and have lost so much weight. Is this because of the septacimia I had because it is out of my system now or could this be linked to the cyst which seems to be infected. I just want to know if this is normal and how long it will take me to feel normal again.

Thankyou in advance for any replies.

  • I'm sorry you are going through all of this. It must be awful for you. Have you seen a kidney specialist? It sounds like you might need to go to a specialist or subspecialist to get to the bottom of this. I know that UTIs (urinary tract infections) can be from GI-tract bugs, since they often travel up the urethra to the bladder. But I have never heard of one traveling all the way up to the kidney- and forming a cyst. How certain are they that the septicemia came from the kidney cyst? Are they sure you didn't have diverticulitis or some other explanation for GI bugs seeding your blood?Hopefully whatever specialists you see will be able to figure this out. Make sure you tell them you don't feel well. It might be helpful to get a thermometer if you don't have one- to make sure you aren't getting a fever.Sorry you have to go through this.Good Luck.

  • Hi Thank you so much for your response, I have seen a kidney specialist. In fact When I was in hospital I was in the renal unit, even though they didnt believe the cyst was the cause at that time which confuesed me. The kidney specialist told me the cyst wasnt connected to the septacimia as it was doment and only 2cm. They only said it was connected after I was discharged and went for an MRI scan which showed the cyst has grown to 4cm and is full of debris. So they figured that it had burst before I went into hospital. They conducted various tests whilst I was there. They ruled out a UTI infection and every other organ within my abdomen was clear and perfectly healthy. I have a thermometer yes, In fact today my temp is 38.1 I have days when My temp spikes and other days when Its not so bad. The last scan was before xmas, It had showed the cyst hadnt grown anymore but it hadnt shrunk either. And I have had no follow up appointment letter since, so I phoned my GP who said he would put me on trimethoprim to try and skrink the cyst. But Im not feeling any better a few weeks after being on them. Like i said before I would like to know if anyone thinks its just part and parcel of getting over septacimia as to why I feel this way or could it be the cyst making me feel ill? It certainly hurts, but my GP says the pain wont be anything to do with the cyst...Im really confuesed.

  • I have just spent a month in hospital with exact same symptoms. In January i started to have kidney problems and they also found a growth/ cyst that they (doctors) say was old blood. (They removed it with a very long needle). In April i had a bowel obstruction and had full blown septacimia. I also had a MRI for the kidney problems and the bowel obstruction was not picked up. U might want to look into any form of obstruction in your entrails.
