hello, i'm female, 28 yaer old, i've noticed a possible lump on the left side of my neck (i say possible as it seems different from the right side), and in my mouth on the left side my tonsil appears to of shrunk back and is rounded compared to the right tonsil, i also have an ache in that same area, i'm doctor shy and don't really wanna go unless i have to, so any advice or comments would be very helpful.

  • Hi Emily Worrying stuff isn't it. As per a thread I posted earlier, I have a swollen tonsil, although it looks more like a rounded lump on my tonsil. I'm currently under ENT, but have scared myself to death by looking on the internet. Not sure what mine is yet, but from what the doctor tells me so far, if an infection gets into your system, it can cause lymph glands (i.e in your neck) to swell, and a dull ache can come with it. If I was you I would go see a doctor as it will most likely mut your mind at rest. Can I ask what is your tonsil like? Mine is normal tonsil coloured but a small regular round shape and more swollen than it should be (although not by much) I don't have any pain or bother from it, but its still worrying. ENT just said to come back in 6 weeks so still waiting..... laura x

  • The "lump" in your neck is most likely a lymph node that has swollen due to a probable infection at the level of the palatine tonsils. No need to be doctor-shy in this case but my suggestion is to have it evaluated, which will take all of 2 or 3 minutes at most, and you will likely receive antibiotic treatment to resolve the infection that is most likely present. While tonsils can variably swell in response to foreign particate matter or allergies, a positive lymph node is typically indicative of the presence of infection that requires treatment. You can try gargling with warm salt-water to help relieve pain and discomfort. You'll be fine, but you need to be evaluated by your doctor. The internet will never suffice as a treatment platform.
