My 14 year old daughter complains of seeing black and becomming dizzy after standing up. She says it lasts anywhere from 10 seconds - a minute and some times it causes her to loose her balance and fall. She says it happens almost everytime she stands up from laying in her bed. Could this be orthostatic hypotension or possibly postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome? Her resting heart rate is high-usually 90-even as high as 120. What do you think? Is it something to be worried about?

  • The black your daughter is seeing upon standing is most likely caused by standing up too fast. The blood while resting is traveling through out the body in that position and upon standing the blood suddenly rushes out of the top of one direction of the body toward another causing a sudden lack or rush of blood resulting in feeling dizzy and unable to see. Happens to me all the time. Tell your daughter to try getting up more slowly so the body has time to respond rather then suddenly. should help.:]nothing really you can do besides that.Hope this helps.

  • Does she have low blood pressure? I have dealt with the same thing--when I was younger my blood pressure would be as low as 85/60. Getting more physical activity seems to have helped regulate things a bit and my blood pressure is now high enough (110/70) where I don't have the dizziness as much. Does she do much physical activity right now?

  • She needs to have an orthostatic blood pressure evaluation done. It is likely the fast change in blood pressure, but this test will determine. The test is painless and simple to perform and would help you determine if it is blood pressure related or something more serious.
