Hi,

I believe I have what is referred to as a sabaceous cyst on my left hip. There's no pain, no inflammation, it's just a raised lump on the left hip about the diameter of a quarter. I am considering having it surgically removed, because it is unsightly and I don't like seeing it there.

Could anyone please provide their own expereinces with having a cyst like this removed surgically? Was it a quick process? Did the surgery have to be done in a hospital?

Any personal experiences of your own would be very helpful.

Thank you.

  • If there's no drainage from it, it's probably not a sebaceous cyst.It would be thick, sort of yellowish.and be malodorous. It could be a lipoma if it's soft&round.Either way it could be removed simply in a doctor's office.

  • I am VERY relieved to hear that! No, there is no drainage, nothing at all. It is, like you said, just a raised lump underneath the skin. It appeared overnight out of the blue, which left me wondering what it was and how it happened. Is having it simply removed in a doctors office a simple procedure?

  • It's simple, but doesn't always yield perfect results.I had a cyst on my face that became inflamed. It was a large bump under my skin that was painful when I applied any pressure to the area.I had it removed, but there is still a hard lump under my skin. It isn't visible, but can be easily felt. The doctor said that often times, cysts grow back very quickly. Another possibility is that it's scar tissue. Either way, I'm waiting it out since it isn't visible right now.My scar, however, is very visible. I know it should fade with time, but it's so visible that it's nearly impossible to cover with makeup. Still, I'd rather have the scar than the gross lump on my face!Just thought I'd share my recent experience!

  • I had a cyst on the back of my leg, at first I thought it was a spiders bite. It became very swollen and very sore to the touch. I went to the doctor and was put on antibiotics and 4 days later had it removed. A swab was sent away and I should have the results in a few days. I now have a hole at the back of my leg and getting it dressed everyday, then every two days. It was extremely painful and I am so glad I went when I did and had it seen to. It was infected. Always have things checked as soon as possible. It may ave grief in the future

  • It's simple, but doesn't always yield perfect results.Sarah, thanks for sharing your experience! Can I ask how you are doing now? I had a cyst removed from my neck in February 2011 but still feel a bump underneath the scar. I was also wondering if it is the cyst or scar tissue. Since it's only been a 2 months since it's been removed, I would be really surprised if the cyst grew back so quickly! I hate the scar that it has left and am hoping it fades soon. I would hate even more if it ever has to be opened back up.

My advice would be to arrange to go back to see the doctor that removed your cyst as it may be the beginning of a recurrence. I know it seems early on but mine began to recur after a week and a half. :(
