Scary Sleep Problem

Has anyone had these problems. I wake at night feeling very edgy and uneasy. Typically it feels like there is a gushing feeling to my chest and I am very short of breath, I sometimes wake up gasping taking a large breath and then my breath is caught. This problem has been off and on and comes in spurts that are bad. I have to get up for a hour and the symptoms slowly go away. The time I wake is almost the same every night between 2:15-2:45.

Otherwise I am a healthy 27 y.o. male who has asthma and a previous history of supraventricular tachicardyia although I have not had an episode in 9 years. I have checked my peak flow readings when waking and they are around 700 although my readings never really go under 650. I have visited the ER for this last year and it set of a group of tests. The ER couldn't find anything and my Dr's ordered tests. I had a chest scan, x-ray, blood work, spirometry test, stress echo, reg, echo, spirometry test and sleep study, they all came back looking good except the sleep study showed an abnormal sleep architecture which they say is nothing big.

I'm scared and don't know what to do. I'm headed back to my sleep dr/ respiratory dr. next week but with the same symptoms as I had last year I don't expect to have any new revelations. Any ideas, thoughts? Please help!

  • Hi,I did have very simular a good few years ago. I would wake up during the night and take a deep breath fighting to take a breath. I would have to sit up or get up and the symptoms would go, it was very scary. The diagnosis was anxiety, after a few months is got better and then vanished. One thing you could try is set your alarm for just before this normally happens and it may hopefully break the cycle.
