I have been throwing up between 10 and 20 times a day for the past two months. Sometimes it is a lot, sometimes a little and is of different consistencies. I am never nauseas and typically feel ok except for getting dehydrated a lot. I have had many gastro intestinal tests done, and nothing has shown up, including ultrasounds, cat-scans, gallbladder tests, EGDs and a few other tests.
They then thought it might be something neurological but nothing showed up on the MRI or MRA and the neurologist I saw didn't seem to think it was related....I am frustrated and tired of this and don't know where to go next. I just wanted to know if anyone had any ideas or insight.

  • There is an extremely wide differential diagnosis for vomiting. Could you be more specific with both your symptoms, the onset, duration, timing, exacerbating factors, alleviating factors, past medical history, anything else you can think of... In a past post, you mentioned you had been diagnosed with a dystonic disorder. This is a major neurologic illness, and I have to question the contribution it has to your present condition.

  • It started in the end of October and is still happening. Typically I will eat something and about 20 minutes later I feel some pressure in my stomach and chest and it comes up. Liquids typically make things come up much faster. Many times however, like yesterday, I had a salad for lunch at 2. At 10 pm I was throwing up pieces of the salad that hadn't digested. I don't feel nauseaus it is just that pressure and then it comes up. I'm not throwing up everything, we estimate about half to 3/4ths of what I eat. They gave me Reglan which I had a terrible rection to so I stopped taking that. Now I only take Prevacid once a day and also am on Lexapro. Also, the vomiting seems to get worse as the day progresses. It usually isn't too bad in the morning, but by evening I can be throwing things up every 5 minutes or so. I did have a history of dystonia in which I would do something too fast and my hands, feet and jaw would lock up and I would kind of lose control. THey put me on a low dose seizure medicine and those went away. Then I went off the medicine and hadn't had one in a long time. Recently I have had a couple episodes of that.

  • Were you on prevacid and lexapro prior to these symptoms developing? Are you also taking any birth control? If you were on prevacid prior to these symptoms, then I would lean towards your having a side effect from this drug. Prevacid can disrupt the gastric juices and cause a real imbalance in your digestion...I would recommend taking a good quality vegetarian digestive enzyme formula before each meal to help with your digestion. I would recommend taking a fairly high dosage of enzymes - this is the best way to heal your digestive tract. Add to this a good probiotic to get keep your intestinal flora in check. Lastly, I have to ask - could you be pregnant? Best wishesDOM

  • I already have had the pregnancy test and it was negative. I have been taking lexapro for over a year and a half. I started taking Prevacid after the symptoms began to help with the acid.

  • Okay, I sure don't have any answers for you - can you think back two months: did you do any traveling? Were you under any stress? Any other illnesses? If you were on prevacid prior to these symptoms, then I would lean towards your having a side effect from this drug. Prevacid can disrupt the gastric juices and cause a real imbalance in your digestion...I would recommend taking a good quality vegetarian digestive enzyme formula before each meal to help with your digestion. I would recommend taking a fairly high dosage of enzymes - this is the best way to heal your digestive tract. Add to this a good probiotic to get keep your intestinal flora in check. Still think this would be helpful for you. I also suggest trying acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine. This can help you get your body back in balance. Best wishesDOM

  • I am not sure where to go from here...i have seen 2 gastrointestinal specialists, a neuologist, a chiropractor(who was the most interested) and just yesterday went to an acupuncturist, who was good, but i threw up a couple times today. Should I give it a couple of days to see if the acupuncture worked? Is it possible i will need several treatments? Should I have more tests done even though I have had a million? This is frustrating and I want a solution!!!

  • Hi there! I have been reading through posts HOPING I would find someone with the same symptoms as my own. I'm sorry you are going through this remittent "vomitting". I too have the same problem. Although, I call mine "regurgitation". After ANYTHING I eat or drink...it comes back up. Sometimes right away, sometime it takes 15 mins. or so. Its not a large amount at once, and not to be gross, but it looks like undigested food that comes up as opposed to vomit, that comes up digested...I have been in the hospital now for a MONTH and 2 days! Its been one long road of tests..tests...and MORE tests. The first hospital I was at actually did all the testing they "could" & after 2 weeks and sent me home. The GI doctor who was in charge of my care said it was "in my head" & didn't see anything wrong with me!! Sent me home in WORSE condition then when I arrived in the ER 2 weeks prior!!I then followed up with a GENUINE GI doctor, who promised me that she would test me until she could figure something out. She was not going to take that this was "in my head", after she saw the condition I was in when I showed up in her office. I was VERY weak, dehydrated, dark and sunken in eyes and a significant amount of weight loss. To make a LONG story short...A feeding tube was inserted and I've undergoneseveral tests, mostly which were repeats from the 1st hospital!!! And one that I could not perform. IT was a stomach emptying test where they made you eat an egg sandwich...Yes...an EGG sandwich that contained barium! I felt kinda fortunate that I couldnt do this test, bc in order to get results, you had to swallow and keep the sandwich down so they could monitor the motlity of my digestive tract!! Mine came right back up! They also did a barium swallow showed very slow emptying into the bowel/instestines. Same results as the 1st scope at hospital #1...They did an Esphogial mamatory which showed abnormal pressure in the esophogus....And another test which called to "watch" different substances go down the esphogus which showed that there was some type of blockage....Tomorrow I will undergo my 2nd endoscopy, to see if the new doctor can figure out what the doc at hospital #1 COULDN'T figure out! Hopefully this time they will be able to pinpoint where the blockage is, to determine where to go next. Its been a long road like I said...Over a month inpatient at 2 different hospitals, but at present am under GREAT care! All my blood tests have been normal other than low potassium, high platelet count and positive ANA...There is also the suspicion that I may have Lupus due to some of the bloodwork, which the hemotologist is looking into. Only other symptom I have is constant nagging pain in my upper abdomen which is being relieved by dilaudid. I'm also on 4 or 5 different meds to help with my stomach motility....Reglan, Protonix, Florastor, Nexium and IV potassium. I TRULY hope they figure out whats going on with you! What area are you in? I have some EXCELLENT doctors that may even be able to recommend someone in your area. I'd love to help as I know how nerve racking all this can be. Takes a toll! I just keep the faith realizing it could be A LOT worse! And I thank God for that! Hang in there and let me know how you make out!

  • Went to the acupuncturist, still throwing up but possibly not as much?? Would another treatment be helpful?? Please make sure your acupuncturist is also NCCAOM (nationally) certified in Chinese herbal medicine. Did they prescribe any herbs? If not, then you would need several treatments and I would recommend going twice weekly if you can afford to - you would more likely see quicker results. I personally think that chinese herbs are most beneficial and hope they have prescribed some. Do you have a diagnosis from your acupuncturist? Could you find out what their diagnosis is and post here? I am very interested. Best wishesDOM

  • so...i have undergone every gastro intestinal test they have told me to get and nothing has come out of any of them. I just had esophogeal motility studies and stomach emptying tests which came back normal. I am getting really frustrated because I feel people are starting to think I am making this up which isn't the case at all. And they schedule things a month in advance and don't seem to realize that in the meantime I am still throwing up every day. The chiropractor has been the only one to make any kind of help in which he adjusts me to access my parasympathetic nervous system in which my vomiting decreased for about 24 hours then goes back to how it was.THey also thought it might be a nerological thing, but the neurologist doesn't seem to think it is. I have a history with dystonia. Does anyone know anything about nervous system issues that could cause this?? I am beyond frustrated and which someone was interested in helping. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions.

  • Have you been on an elimination diet to see if it is allergies, or even changed cleaning products. Vomiting in my house usually is allergic reaction to something. The salad time, did you have anything to eat between the salad and the vomiting?

  • This site is great for looking at problems! I found this for you: http://symptoms.wrongdiagnosis.com/cosymptoms/dystonia/vomiting-blood-desc.htm Although you aren't vomiting blood, you may be vomiting "occult" blood (blood in small amounts that the eye can't see).
