My 4 year old son got fever which is around 99-100degree F in the morning and exceeds 101-101.6 in the nights. After having the paracetamol syrup also fever is not subsiding. Slight enlargement of liver. I am worried. what could it be??

  • You say his liver is enlarged, I assume you have palpated the area and found the right upper (his right) quadrant of his abdomen to be swollen / enlarged? If so, is the site tender at all? Does pain exist constantly or only when palpated? You also say the fever is recurrent. How long has he had these symptoms and has he had any other complaints? Any irregular stools, diarrhea, constipation or loss of appetite? With only those symptoms it would be very hard to give advice with any certainty. If you don't experience any break in the fever with paracetamol (tylenol) syrup try the children's nurofen (ibuprofen). Also, prolonged use of paracetamol has been linked with liver damage but that's also dependant on dosage. If you stay within the dosing suggestions you should be fine. My advice would be to try the nurofen and watch for other symptoms. If he complains of pain in the area or experiences yellowing of the skin get him in to see a doc.
